[I understand the premise. And, would love to make an exception on this thread to remain in Prince: Music & More... however, one exception begats another. All must be treated equally. Truth is, it's a thread about other artists "non-Prince".
Nothing idle about it, Anx... just doin' what I gots ta do. I wish you'd allow it to stay longer Audience, but, I will honor your wish to lock it up. - June7] |

Hmmm Ten other artists I listen to.
Sad to say...95% Prince here. The other 5% Last cd I bought (a week ago) Rumors by Fleetwood Mac. No Doubt EWF Meshell (I've bought one of here cd's thanks to Supa ) Los Lonely Boys (Bought one of their cd's that has a song on it I like) Lenny Kravitz (Haven't bought anything of his in around 6 years) I don't go by person, I go by song overall. I use to think I was very into music but it turns out overall I am not. Let me think...this is really hard for me and actually something I've just noticed about myself in the last year. Sad isn't it? I'm firmly planted in denial

What rocks my world changes quite frequently...
So in no particular order, here's my list for now* Pet Shop Boys - Best english songwriting duo in existance since Lennon/McArtney & Morrisey/Marr partnerships have "dissolved" The Cure - All time fave. Will never tire of their music. Sonic Youth - Been listening to Rather Ripped & The Destroyed Room all week. Thurston Moore is a guitar hero. Dinosaur Jr - Can't wait for their new album. J Mascus another guitar hero. Karate - Just f*cking amazing musicians. Highly reccomended. Yo La Tengo - Their new album is really growing on me. Bright Eyes - Listening to these guys is like reading a novel. Great stuff, great lyrics. Daniel Johnston - Always have an album of his handy in case I need some cheering up. Preston School of Industry - Beautifuly simple tunes. Sun Kil Moon - Got the Tiny Citys album recently, and it's addictive. Thats it for now *Prince omitted as requested

I have tons of Cds and vinyl so it´s really tough to simmer it down to just ten artists, and I know I´ll forget a few, and my taste also changes every now and then, and some artists will always be among my favorites even though I might not listen to their music for a while , these phases come and go, but here´s a short list anyway.
1. Master Ace: One of my favorite rappers...I don´t like everything he´s released but there are some true gems on every album. I like his storytelling, the beats he uses, his clear way of rapping, his pronounciation, his grammar, his humor, the way he taught me things about life in general and NYC and Black America in particular. 2. KRS ONE, the teacher....been listening to him since day one, when The Pussy Is Free came out in 1986. Great lyrics, a lot of wisdom, and a deep and funny guy who is the epitome of real HipHop...just like Master Ace. 3. John Coltrane....My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme ! Words are not really necessary when it comes to John Coltrane... 4. Sezen Aksu. I love her , her lyrics, her music, the beats, the melodies, plus she´s from the Turkish westcoast and is a very openminded and deep person. There is a lot of joy, pain, fun and love and passion in her music. The true Turkish diva. 5. Zeki Müren.. RIP...great voice, great manners, an old school gentleman, had lots of style . One of the boldest and courageous Turkish singers ever. His voice was so fantastic that he would even sing for tough Turkish army generals despite being gay, which is an absolute no-no for macho military men. His voice is mesmerizing and listening to him takes me to another dimension. Sometimes when I have my Turkish moments here in the cold of North Germany I make myself a fresh Turkish mocca coffee and put on some Zeki Müren classics. Or I watch a couple of videos on youtube 6. Curtis Mayfield. One of America´s greatest songwriters ever. Deep lyrics, and a great instrumentalist too. And very prolific as well. I love his music and it is very soothing to me. 7. D ´ Angelo and Maxwell... the reason why I mention them in one line together is that they don´t put out a lot of music...but what they have released up to now is , IMO , great, soulful stuff. 8. Some Kate Bush stuff, actually a lot of it, but not necessarily all of it. 9. A few songs by George Michael...a good songwriter with interesting music, and a torn soul, plus a liberal minded, partly depressed man who smokes a lot of weed and doesn´t take himself too seriously. George Michael and Zeki Müren made me more open minded towards gay men when I was younger and helped me respect and tolerate their lifestyles. Coming from a strictly heterosexual, Hip Hop background , this is something I truly appreciate these days. 10. A mixed bag of Foo Fighters, Funk in general, Midnight Star, Cameo, Zapp, Full Force, Ice-T´s early stuff up until 1988, early IceCube, Public Enemy, Dancehall Reggae and Mercan Dede and Sufi music and Turkish Sanat music. Too many to mention, really. See my profile for more info. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I've always been a bit of an 80's buff. I love the music from the 80's... Prince included, obviously.
But here are a handful of artists I "dig" from the 80's, but never really got into. 1. The Bangles (I know 3 of their songs and love 'em) 2. Ricky Astley (own a CD of his hits... good, but not extraordinary) 3. Bon Jovi (I like 'Livin' on a prayer' and his recent stuff isn't bad either) 4. Belinda Carlisle (havent checked into her in a while, but like her songs) 5. Billy Idol (well, I thought he was the greatest thing... when I was 3... now I think the guy's just mental) 6. Phil Collins (not completely 80's, but I like his music 2) 7. Madonna (definitely one of my favorites!) That's all I can recall right now. Madonna is probably the one I got into the most, but never to the same degree as Prince or Jesse McCartney. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

I've been listening to a lot of ambient, down tempo, chillout acid jazz. Some of my current favorites:
The Orb Portishead Stereolab Visit Venus (Music for Space Tourism Vol I) Air Four Tet Amon Tobin ....and also DJ Shadow if it's possible to squeeze him into that category. I've also been listening to some "cocktail disco" by Dimitri From Paris. I also listen to a lot of Ozric Tentacles. They play the grooviest instrumental progressive, techno space rock I've ever heard....probably the only instrumental progressive, techno space rock I've ever heard. ...and in the middle of all that I'm usually spinnin' some Fat Boy Slim! I know that's actually eleven, but what the hell! ..... Just say "NO" to cow mucus consumption!

legna said: Van Halen imo, jump started metal again Magnificent choice! Eddie Van Halen was a true innovative guitar genius and David Lee Roth, toastmaster of the 80s, set the "front man" standard for bombastic celebration. Flanked by punk on one side and disco on the other, they did indeed jump start metal again in the late 70s. Their 1978 debut album is a truly electrifying experience! ..... Occasionally, I'll listen to:
Rob Thomas The Fray Ne-Yo (only one song from each, though) Nelly Furtado (2 songs, Say it Right & Promiscious) And I'm guilty of indulging in some techno music. I own "Fired Up!" volumes 1 & 2, and like a few of those songs... just to dance 2 really... And some songs from Cascada, I get into... even though it's all computers and doesn't really count as "real music"... or at least not Prince's def. of real music. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong.
