FANS OF THE ROLLING STONES... help! where should I start?
I saw this one in tha wrecka stow about a year ago: & the guy I buy vinyl from told me not to get it... that I wouldn't like it until I heard some of their other stuff first... I like Mick Jagger & everything (his imagery from back in the day) and I always loved that tongue trademark I have about 3 t-shirts... but I have no music I think it's time because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine The three-disc box set Singles Collection: The London Years contains every single the Rolling Stones released during the '60s, including both the A- and B-sides. It is the first Stones compilation that tries to be comprehensive and logical -- for all their attributes, the two Hot Rocks sets and the two Big Hits collections didn't present the singles in chronological order. In essence, the previous compilations were excellent samplers, where Singles Collection tells most of the story (certain albums, like Aftermath, Beggars Banquet, and Let It Bleed, fill in the gaps left by the singles). The Rolling Stones made genuine albums -- even their early R&B/blues albums were impeccably paced -- but their singles had a power all their own, which is quite clearly illustrated by the Singles Collection. By presenting the singles in chronological order, the set takes on a relentless, exhilarating pace with each hit and neglected B-side piling on top of each other, adding a new dimension to the group; it has a power it wouldn't have had if it tried to sample from the albums. Although it cheats near the end, adding singles from the Metamorphosis outtakes collection and two singles from Sticky Fingers, this captures the essence of the '60s Stones as well as any compilation could. Casual fans might want to stick with the Hot Rocks sets, since they just have the hits, but for those that want a little bit more, the Singles Collection is absolutely essential. I'm not the biggest Stones fan, but, if you're just starting out, you may want to look into Forty Licks. It's a pretty good overview of their career. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I must admit that the thing that made them such a great band in the 60's is everything that holds me back of still being a RS fan. They bacame too big and pompous, but their early work is terrific when it comes to sounding fresh and mixing the US R&R music with their UK blend.
I posted the www.allmusic.com review of this particular compilation as I just got it and it just gives you a good overview what is so good about them, from sweet songs like As Tears Go By, to obvious stompers like Sympathy For The Devil. Check out their discography on AllMusic, as it is a good oversightof what is good about them then and now. Btw, I love, love, love Mick Jagger's solo effort Wandering Spirit. Check that out also; it's got that old vibe I love so much.

Anyway, IORR isn't their strongest album. Quite a bit of filler on it although it has a few real highlights - the title track, Time Waits For No One and Fingerprnt File. Try Sticky Fingers, Exile on Mainstreet and Goat's Head Soup first, in that order. One at a time. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Which he and his daughter have now retracted and said was a joke. Keith's big on maintaining his "bad boy" image ... [i] There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth.
