The Punk Rock Roots of Madonna

http://www.drownedmadonna.com/punk/
Madonna moved from her native Michigan to New York in 1977, with dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. She studied with Martha Graham and Pearl Lang, and later performed with several modern dance companies, including Alvin Ailey and the Walter Nicks dancers.

In 1979, she became part of the Patrick Hernandez Revue, that had the hit "Born to Be Alive." She traveled to Paris with Hernandez; it was there that she met Dan Gilroy. Upon returning to New York, the pair formed the Breakfast Club. Madonna originally played drums for the band, but she soon became the lead singer. In 1980, Madonna left the band and formed Emmy with Gary Burke and Stephen Bray.

Together, Madonna and Bray created club tracks which led to a recording deal with Sire Records. A demo tape of these tracks worked its way to Mark Kamins, a New York-based DJ/producer. Kamins directed the tape to Sire Records, who signed the singer during 1982. Kamins produced Madonna's first single, "Everybody," which became a club and dance hit at the end of 1982; her second single, 1983's "Physical Attraction," was another club hit. In June of 1983, she had her third club hit with "Holiday".

Madonna's self-titled debut album was released in September of 1983; "Holiday" became her first Top 40 hit the following month. "Borderline" became her first Top Ten hit in March of 1984, beginning a remarkable string of 17 consecutive Top Ten hits. While "Lucky Star" was climbing to number four, Madonna began working on her first starring role in a feature film, Susan Seidelman's Desperately Seeking Susan...

It's the opposite actually. The Banshees couldn't play their instruments when the debuted at the 100 Club in 1976. And Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols was the worst bass player you ever heard.

I'm not sure if grainy black and white pictues of somebody HOLDING a guitar makes them punk, but I know I didn't see anything in the text above that has a connection to punk rock.

ballet?
Alvin Ailey?
"Born To Be Alive"?
club tracks?
"Holiday"?
Desperately Seeking Susan?

Maybe this thread title should read 'The Roots of Madonna' lol

Playing is about attitude. These bands had a sound. Shit musicians, technically yes. Madonna doesnt have anything. How can anybody try and front it? She is picking up the guitar to try and look credible. She is NOT a guitarist by any standards.

it's great you don't look at what's presented to you. shows you'd rather go by your assumptions than maybe looking at something.

Madonna hasn't stood up to establishment?

have you been following her career?

1985 Madonna holds the first AIDS Benefit Concert after longtime friend Martin Bourgoyne Dies. When she donates all the proceeds from her Virgin Tour stop at Madison Gardens. 1987 during Who's That Girl Tour, As she sings Papa Don't Preach imagies of Ronald Ragan and Pope John Paul II flash behind her followed by the words Safe Sex in protest of their stance on Condoms and AIDS.

These are just a few of the times Madge has used her name and art to make political statements.

I meant musically...she's done tremendous work and I did'nt mean to put her in the same league as Avril and co. This new generation has no idea what punk truly means. Madge was there saw it all but she's not a punk musician. Attitude maybe...

This thread has the makings of a powder keg, but instead of downplaying Madge's punk cred, I'll say something positive; lord knows some of her forums are filled with the most vile negativity directed at basically the entire music industry outside of Madonna, if you think this forum can get negative, you ain't seen nothin'

Madonna was/is on that grind, she deserves all the success she has and whatever praise comes her way, warranted or unwarranted.

Funny quote about AVRIL..

AVRIL LAVIGNE
People’s Scoop
“For Lavigne, 21, her ‘new’ image is just the latest, natural next step. ‘I love putting lotion on—I'm obsessed with lavender. It's a lot of fun, and I think the older you get, the more you get into it.’” (p. 185)
The Ugly Truth
As Confuscious said, with age comes greater appreciation of lotion. Remember when punk music meant getting a blowjob in the alley outside a $5 rock show, then walking in and getting hit with a Dixie Cup full of piss? Think about those days when you see Lavigne’s new album in the “Punk” section at Tower Records. Now do your best not to cry.

Oh they did...I used to be a sales rep and visited Tower stores weekly...this writer was just trying to make a point. When Avril's first album was out...I remember kids branding her as edgy and punk...and I would want to shake them. GG ALLEN and SID VICIOUS would turn in their graves!!!
