You know those movies that seemed really, really awesome when you were a teenager? Then, when you saw them again as a adult, you recognized them for the romantic dreck they always were? Mahogany exemplifies the breed. Made in 1975, Mahogany is mired in tedious melodrama that is not enhanced by a predictable and sexist ending. Diana Ross, a poverty-stricken young woman, pulls herself up by her camisole straps until she is at the top of the fashion world. Along the way she meets terrible people who want to use her. They break her heart. She has trouble bouncing back. One of those troubled people who seem to flock to Ross's unstable character is a deranged photographer, played with wild abandonment by Anthony Perkins. His psychotic performance gives this film its only energy. Ross remains unfulfilled until she finds love with inappropriate Billy Dee Williams, who shows none of his usual charisma. --Rochelle O'Gorman

I guess you have to be a fan of Ross to really appreciate the movie, but that review was a little too negative... .lol:

It is. I love Theme From Mahogany, though. I do not have any memories of the movie. But that track; beautiful; it made my über-hard-to-get-into "Pure"-playlist, with my own favourite EVER songs.

Cool, what else is on the list?

Have you heard Mariah Carey`s cover of the song? I know there`s a few remixes, but i`ve never heard any of them hmmm

What else? It is an ever expanding list; http://www.prince.org/msg/8/207312 but Theme was on there from the start.

And no, haven't heard, but I am not really into people who make their own version of what I think is already perfect. And I am not really fond of Mariah Carey's "I am not married anymore, I am a ho now"-image. It is just too superficial for me, while actually I like superficial.

I used to like her voice. She created a very special place for herself, sure, using the record industry as her tool, but then she wanted to be 'street'. Or 'urban',or whatever they call it these days. I just want her to sing beautiful songs, not a thirteen-in-a-dozenkind of songs where you think, "Uhmmm, could be Whitney, could be... anything..."

Rant over!

You have some of my favorites there, "Putting the damage on", "The screams of passion", "Pull up to the bumper", "Rock with you" and "Give me the night"... highfive

You`re right about Mariah Carey... She was great when she first started out, but after she joined the rappers i lost interest.

I mean, wtf? Did she sell out as a kid or is she selling out now? Will the real Mariah please stand up, please stand up, please stand up?

I think she is a real good singer that grew up to quick and now is acting out. Imean, some hiphop remixes of her songs are actually REALLY good, but I always just want her to sing I'l Be There, hehehe.

Or All I Want For Xmas Is You.

I saw an interview where she talked about that, how she was controlled by Tommy Mottola, and how he made her put on clothes before going out.

Her music was like a breath of fresh air back then, i can imagine hearing "Vision of love" on the radio for the first time... cloud9
...or my favorite M.C song, "Love takes time" worship

Is that what's going on? The cover is misleading and makes it look like a movie about disco (even though there is some disco in it). I just saw this one and wow...It's campy! I thought it might actaully be good but not IMHO.

Same thing happened with me, DirtyChris. Fell alseep and didn't bother to rewind (it was a video I rented). I managed to wake up at the photo montage/psuedo music video for "Do You Know Where You're Going To", which is pretty cool.

I like it when she's

with the orange light behind her
so it kinda looks like a cocoon or something

This movie isn't great, but I like it lol It's very cheesy,in a fun 70s way.Diana's performance is over the top! The film also gets points for it's excellent theme song "Do You Know Where You're Going To",which I love.

I've always liked this movie. Beautiful theme song. The best Diana has ever sung. Although it was strictly a vehicle for promoting Diana, it's soooo 70's, that I love it despite how vain the film is. Her scene with Anthony Hopkins in the car is one of the best "way out" scenes ever in a mainstream Hollywood film.
