I like that album! Me too This one I wasn't too thrill about... Blessing In Disguise is a nice tune tho' In my opinion, after Riot, the rest of the albums were Sly Stone solo efforts..... Just my opinion.. I know that's just you're opinion, but I believe There's A Riot Goin' On was his first true solo record, ALMOST! I mean, a majority of that album wasn't even recorded with the original Family Stone members. Much of it was recorded by himself and other musicians that Sly brought in like Miles Davis, Ike Turner, and Bobby Womack. Check me out and add me on:

Neither Miles nor Ike participated in the recordings. It's very likely they shared a coke connection and just partied together. test

Now was that him on bass??? Not sure.. Graham stated that Sly would re-record over the original recordings.

does not share the FAMILY STONE designation and though does, it sounds more like a Gamble Huff record. HOY has a few decent songs, but even the most ardent fans fade away. The label was wise to cut the deadweight. Man,I have to get these albums! Many people think that Sly fell off as the 70s wore on,but I'd still like to hear this music.

How can they go from this to Dance to The Music? It sounds like 2 different groups...was this like before Acid and then Dance to the music was after? I'm not really that fond of A Whole New Thing either, but I'm sure it'll, at least partially, grow on me. I agree.'A Whole New Thing' doesn't do much for me,either.I have to give it a chance.

I'm still listening to this box set quite a bit. A few more observations:
-On Fresh, I won't say that the alternate "Babies Making Babies" is better than the original, but this other version is pretty damn funky and gets much play in my car these days. -On Stand!, "Sex Machine" still sounds extremely funky. That one also gets lots of play. Thanks to the liner notes, because I've ALWAYS wondered what kind of early technology allowed Sly's voice to sound like that on "Don't Call Me Nigger". -Life is an interesting album. I'm jamming it. The studio version of "Love City" is pretty cool. -Still haven't listened at all to A Whole New Thing. There's just too much music in the set, but I'm getting to it and I'm enjoying the comments about that album on here. -Now, I'm really glad that I purchased Rhino's "Funky Grooves and Rare Soul" box set last year- those Little Sister and 6ix songs on disc 2 put the outtakes of Riot in a better perspective. -Still jamming that Small Talk. The title track kinda reminds me of "Mr. Wiggles" by Parliament. Small Talk is pretty inconsistent but reminds me of Prince's Grafitti Bridge- lots of BS on the album, but also a few great tunes that make it worth owning. -When I just feel like some down and dirty funk, I blast "Thank You For Talking" off of Riot. I've always loved the song, but the remastered version allows me to pump it hard and loud from my car whereas, in the past, it'd always sound distorted if I turned the volume up on Anthology or my original copy of Riot. That's it. The liner notes are very interesting but only make me want those dudes to finish up the book so I can read everyone's story in it's entirety. Peace, y'all.

As a Sly lover/disciple, don't waste the $$ on "Heard Ya Missed Me"..It's Sly's weak attempt at a disco record.
...now "Back On The Right Track" is the shit!!

..oh yeah..and Billy Preston played on "Riot". He played the keys on "Family Affair".

I have been eyeballing this set every time I go to Best Buy... I know next to nothing about Sly Stone, but this seems like a beautiful opportunity to get edumacated about his music. I am going thru a 70's phase lately, so the timing is perfect...
Maybe this weekend I'll pull the trigger on it. Not sure if I have the $$$, though... we'll see.
