APRIL 10,2007-The Collection-OUT NOW!

Today,Epic/Sony has released 'The Collection,' a box set of the group's first seven albums: A Whole New Thing,Dance To The Music,Life,Stand!,There's A Riot Going On,Fresh and Small Talk.

The collection is released with a limited edition "Bonus DVD" that is only available at Best Buy shops. It contains footage from Sly and The Family Stone at Rockin' In USA 1974,with clippings of "M'Lady" and "Everybody Is A Star".The seven Sly & The Family Stone albums in 'The Collection' will be released individually on April 24.'The Greatest Hits',including "Hot Fun In The Summertime","Everybody Is A Star" and "Thank You (Fallentinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" will follow in May.

Adam Block,Legacy's senior vice president/general manager: "This is part of a long-term commitment to bring this artist back into the music fan's consciousness. He has existed in our subconsciousness through sampling and his enduring influence. We felt it made sense to celebrate him in a way that hadn't happened before. These reissues offered the first new Sly and the Family Stone music in 30 years, and the vault still holds some wonderful surprises."

That's good to know...I wonder if the Greatest Hits will have bonus tracks also? I already have the Essential Sly Stone which has these tracks plus "High On You" so unless the Greatest Hits has some really good extras I won't bother getting it.

I'll probably buy it,for completion purposes lol Just so I can have all of their albums.I do hope there are some bonus tracks, though.

That's a nice, well-thought out, comprehensive set.

I have the remastered Anthology, but I was waiting for something like this.

SUPERB!

CoolMF

Don't have much of a review for this, but I'm really enjoying this so far. A few observations:

-The booklets are nice and interesting. The rare pictures are very interesting- I 've never seen them and, from 1 of the pics, I didn't know that Sly played the sax (there's a pic of him playing sax and the organ at the same time).

-The liner notes are interesting, but the Stand! liner notes seem to be cruel towards Sly.

-Haven't listened and compared any of the discs yet, but, from what I've heard of the discs, they sound really good and were well worth the $50.

-I never listened much to Small Talk, but not anymore. That's my joint and that's what I've been listening to the for the most part. Man, Small Talk is some serious funk that I wasn't hip to until this week!

I watched the bonus DVD.Nothing too exciting...just some random footage that was hastily thrown together to create videos for the songs "M'Lady" and "Everybody Is A Star".To those of you who buy the box set without the DVD,you aren't missing much.

So "A Whole New Thing" is really not working for me...I thought I had heard all of this but this early disk has the beginnings of genius but it falls short to me...

How can they go from this to Dance to The Music? It sounds like 2 different groups...was this like before Acid and then Dance to the music was after?

There's a lot of development and evolution that resulted in the Family Stone and you're just at the beginning. There's a book due in 2009.

I'm not really that fond of A Whole New Thing either, but I'm sure it'll, at least partially, grow on me.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Give Thing a chance people...

It wasn't a hit album, for the people..

But according to George Clinton, alot of musicians study this album when it came out....

He stated that he had to re-group lol back to the drawing board.

biggrin If This Room Could Talk & Underdog are my faves.

Keep the Funk (and this post) alive!
Man this purchase was a no brainer, providing you had the loot. wink
I've only listened to Stand! and can attest the sound is very nice. Great remastering, packaging, liner notes, pics, etc. It really is a great deal and well worth every penny.

Two record are left off the boxset.

does not share the FAMILY STONE designation and though does, it sounds more like a Gamble Huff record.

HOY has a few decent songs, but even the most ardent fans fade away. The label was wise to cut the deadweight.

Blessing In Disguise is a nice tune tho' biggrin

In my opinion, after Riot, the rest of the albums were Sly Stone solo efforts.....

Just my opinion..
