Sampling has long been a staple of hip-hop producers. By that standard, it WAS an alternative to mainstream pop/r&b music. Unfortunately, hip-hop has BECOME mainstream music. So producers with a hip-hop background are judged by their skills as MUSIC producers, which they aren't, really.

I think the cat's skills as a hip-hop producer are nothing to sneeze at, but he's not THAT great.

He's a corny joke whose music is basically commercial viable to non-rap music fans.

I think that he is under rated as a producer. I mean, listen to the tracks that he has done for Game's and Nas's albums. He to me is like R.Kelly, he knows how to make the music that is going to sell for a particular crowd and when it comes time to really do something good he does....."Ordinary People", as well as the stuff with Black-eyed Peas, are great examples of the former and latter. As long as one uses samples in a creative way, I see nothing wrong with it. It is when an artist relies on a James Brown sample, is when I have issues with it. Will, is pretty good.
