If you call yourself an Al Green fan, you need to get these albums:
Al Green Gets Next to You (1971) Green distinguishes himself on his cover of The Temptations' "Can't Get Next to You" and The Doors' "Light My Fire," but it's "Tired of Being Alone" is where I feel the world sees a glimpse of the great songs he will make in the following years. Let's Stay Together (1972) IMO, the title track is one of the most definitive songs in the history of soul music. It also contains "It Ain't Fun to Me," "La-La for You" and the cover of The Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart." I'm Still in Love with You (1972) As good as "Let's Stay Together" is, IMO this is the definitive Al Green album. It's filled with memorable songs -- the No. 1 hit "I'm Still in Love with You," the essential track "Love and Happiness" and covers of Kris Kristofferson's "For The Good Times" and Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman." Call Me (1973) By this time, Green was rolling out the hits. "You Ought to Be with Me" was a No. 1 hit and the title track just missed the mark. The album also features the hit "Come and Take Me (Here I Am)," "Your Love Is Like the Morning Sun" and his covers of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away." Livin' for You (1973) Another great album, featuring the No. 1 hit "Livin' for You," the top three hit "Let's Get Married," "Unchained Melody" and "My God Is Real." Al Green Explores Your Mind (1974) Another great album, featuring the hits "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)" and "Take Me to the River," which was covered by The Talking Heads four years later. Al Green Is Love (1975) This is the album featuring the No. 1 hit "L-O-V-E," "I Wish You Were Here" and "Love Ritual." On a lesser note, I also would recommend: his debut album "Green Is Blues" (1969); 1976's "Full of Fire," featuring the title track that was his final No. 1 on the soul music charts; and "The Belle Album" (1977), where Green left his association with producer Willie Mitchell and eventually the secular music scene to become a gospel singer/minister. [Edited 7/25/07 19:57pm] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS! | |
