For the past 5 years, I've been a fan of Jesse McCartney. I could relate to him and his music because we're very close in age.

His music has meant a lot to me in the past, getting me through the hardest times of my life through high school. It's brought me up when I was down. I've met him twice in person and seen 2 of his concerts. When I was 14-19, he was the one artist I'd follow and I was quite the fan (truly fitting Prince's definition of a "fan").

I've given this whole day to listening thru his music because he turned 20 today. So we'll be the same age for 3 months and 20 days, until I go on 21. I've stopped listening to Prince 4 an entire day because I'd kinda forgotten about the other artists I've listened 2. Jesse was the one that I'd given the most time to, so I felt I needed to give him a little extra time.

Listening thru his music was great after not having done so in a long time. But at the same time, there's a lingering sadness. I felt like I'm moving away from Jesse, as if I'm growing up and leaving him behind because his music doesn't reach me the way it used to. We're around the same age, so it's kinda weird.

Prince has already taught me so much in many different areas and I've only been a serious "follower" for the past 9 weeks. Jesse can't reach me the same way, so it feels like I'm leaving him behind to seek a certain enlightenment that only Prince can show me.
I'll always be a JMac fan at heart, but I feel about about bumping him down to 2nd place after he's been a part of my life for so long.
I doubt anyone here could understand that (I mean, Jesse McCartney of all people, right?), but I had to get this out.

I'm here to tell you that you are not the only one who's experienced that sort of thing. When I was a kid, Michael Jackson was my #1 performer. Prince was always number 2. I was 5 when Purple Rain came out and I was all about Thriller and I felt like Prince was trying to be like him but I was a fan cause I loved the songs that I heard which was 1999, When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy.

Fast forward to when I was 12 and I had surrounded myself with Prince's music. Diamonds and Pearls was out already when I heard the song, Black or White on the radio. It didn't hit me like it would have if it was 4 years earlier when Bad was released and it freaked me out. In fact, I was disgusted cause that's when they started calling him "The King of Pop". I was like Hell no, Prince deserves to be called that! I knew from that point on that Prince had taken over the #1 spot as my favorite artist. If MJ had released a new album between 1987 and 1991, things might have been different but 16 years later, Prince still reigns supreme for me. I may not be as into MJ's latest stuff but his older work will always have a place in my heart.

I say all this to let you know that it's not odd at all when your musical taste change. I think it happens to everyone to some degree. I tell you what, you couldn't have replaced Jesse McCartney as your favorite with a better artist than Prince.

I doubt anybody here really cares about JMac as much as I do or sees what I see. But I've always been an individual when it comes to my music. I've followed this guy from the days when he was virtually an unknown to when he became famous. It's been great growing with him. We'll always have the past, that's for sure.

Prince outdoes Jesse in every single way possible, but he is the ultimate. He has so much yet to teach me and has already found a home in my heart- something his music will continue to reward me for as I continue discovering it. He's on a completely different plateau all to himself and he already brings out the best in me. I want to allow him to continue to do so, even if it means leaving my past behind.
