The most soulful songs you have ever heard

It doesn't have to be the genre of soul, but the songs that make you feel really warm and... soulful.

My top ten off the top my head are;

Say a Little Pray-Aretha

Daydreaming-Aretha

Loving you- Minnie Ripperton

What's Happening Brother-Marvin

What's Going On-Marvin

I Want You-Marvin

Sweetest Thing- Lauryn Hill

Natural High-Bloodstone

Darling Dear-Jackson 5

Come Take this Body-Janet

Another question; What makes a song sound soulful to you? Is it the voice of the singer, the music etc. For me it's the music, as well as the voice. I also find songs that have lots of sweet harmonies or ablibs more soulful.

A good example is with "Darling Dear" now considering MJ was only 11 or so when he sang that song it could have easily ended up sounding quite shallow, but you put James Jamerson wonderful bass, the wonderful harmonies at the beginning and the middle of the song as well as MJ Man/child, voice you get something that sounds very soulful and quite deep..

That melancholy note, or when you can hear it in their voice, that just makes my stomach lurch love Like sneezing is a tiny bit of an orgasm, it's like a tiny little hint of falling in love, its addictive!

Maybe not the artist type in mind for this thread.

But Eva Cassidy's voice is exquistely soulful.

Listen to her version of "Autumn Leaves". "Over the Rainbow". "You Take My Breath Away". "Songbird". "What a Wonderful World". "Danny Boy" for cryin' out loud -- that actually makes me cry. touched

Her voice has a melancholy sweetness/power that one doesn't hear every day.

Is that why snuff was so popular? If I had known that sex was anything like sneezing, I mighta tried it.

In a way it is. But at the same time I've had this impression that Lauryn Hill has been heavily influence by the J5 lol And I could actually hear the J5 singing this in their more deeper moments.

She sang it like she just watched the lynching scene.

I'd like to add Mahalia Jackson's "His Eye Is On The Sparrow". That gotta be the most gut wrenching rendition ever touched

Chaka Khan's teary "In Love We Grow" and the haunting "Egyptian Song".

You haven't? it was on the J5 "Third Album", it was never a single, but the bassline by Jamerson as well as MJ soulful voice makes it one of their best songs imo. I even heard it is one of Prince's favourite. confused

Anyway, I got the song from youtube. Enjoy.

Nice picks. I should've had some Aretha in my list.

From that late 60s Atlantic period, anytime she was at the piano it just happened.
(I Never Loved A Man, Since You Been Gone, Baby I Love You, etc.)

It's too hard to choose from those Aretha years. I picked those particular songs on the basis of the personnel, particular studios, and songwriters, as much as for Aretha. They are not her best vocal performances, however.
