This one was the second worst IMO, the worst has to go to that Levert, James Ingram episode from 1986 a month ago.

That one was horrible also. A few days later, I threw away the recording I had made of the show.

I didn't even make it to the end of this week's episode though. As soon as I heard Shitney, I could actually feel the vomit rising to my throat. I snatched the DVD out of the recorder and threw it in the trash.

The only part of the line I saw was the disco ball at the very beginning. As soon as I heard the words..."I don't know why I like it....I just do", I said...."Well dammitt, I don't like it and here's how much I don't like it". I was in the other room at the trash can before the dancing even started. lol

Yeah,it was pretty bad, wasn't it? lol Reminds me of why I dislike the late 80s so much.

There were a few cool moments.Lace performing "My Love Is Deep" was fun to watch...that's actually a decent song, even though it sounds like everything else on the radio back then.Hearing Earth Wind and Fire's "System Of Survival" made me smile.I remember their 1987 comeback and it was huge.Everyone was thrilled that they were back together, with a great album ('Touch The World').Freddie Jackson's "Look Around" is an incredible song music

Did anyone else think the Whodini performance was awkward and sloppy? I don't know....maybe I just don't like seeing rappers on 'Soul Train' lol For the first song "Be Yourself",they should have asked Millie Jackson to come there and perform it with them. She would have showed them how it's supposed to be done! lol

CoolMF

I'm not in agreement with the comments regarding this episode. A few reasons why I really loved this one:

-Whodini was great! Their dancers brought back so many memories of the variations on those great mid-'80's dances- the Troop, the Robocop, the Cabbage Patch, and the other hip hop dances. The 2nd performance was ok, but "Be Yourself" (plus, I used to like that song alot) was dope!

-I forgot about the dude that used to wear the various Halloween masks. He was killing me in the Max Headroom mask. And my man who always wore the shades, danced by himself, and always stepped and slided across the stage (I think that his name may have been "Flash") was in rare form on that episode.

-More memories. When they played "Bad", it brought back memories of the various Michael Jackson dancers back when that was a serious way of dancing, not the joke and cliches that it is now. Mike was still on top back then. Yeah, that was pretty cool how, as soon as Bad started, all of the dudes morphed into their Michael moves.

-I've seen the comments on here, but I never caught Rosie Perez on there until this weekend. She danced just like she was in the opening sequence of Do The Right Thing.

-I've seen Freddie Jackson in concert several times in recent years so it was interesting to see him back when he was fat. For those that don't know, Freddie still tours, dropped all of that weight more than 5 years ago and has kept it off, and still croons pretty decently.

Sorry, but as an "'80's baby", I was grooving with Soul Train for the entire hour on this past Sat.

you guys are crazy. i thought this episode rocked. it wasn't my favorite but i did enjoyed whodini and lace, whom i've never heard of until this episode. it was also fun to see rosie perez. i love the 80's soul train episodes more than the ones from the 70's and hope they keep em coming.

the guy with the masks absoulutely kills me. you'd never see that on the more current episodes!

I was bored out of my mind and was about to nod off to sleep during the song. I woke up for the interview though. I love the part when he told Don that he wrote "Jam Tonight" ten years ealier for a bunch of old people. That had me laughing my ass off because that's exactly who the song sounds like it was made for....old people. It's just uptempo enough to get their blood circulating but not hard enough to give them a heart attack. I hate weak attempts at uptempo music. Late 80s.....horrible years.....horrible years! lol

When I saw Whodini and Freddie Jackson listed as the guests, I was hoping it was maybe an episode from early 1985 when Freddie had out "Rock Me Tonight" and Whodini had out "Freaks Come Out At Night" and "Five Minutes Of Funk". I would have been able to tolerate that episode.

Whodini's 1984 album is the last thing I like from them. Their late 80s stuff is slower and has too many samples. It sounds like the beginning of how rap eventually turned out in the 1990s. There were also a lot of rap newcomers during the late 1980s that were much slower and stripped down than in the early 1980s. Once again....late 80s.....horrible years....HORRIBLE years! lol

I love the early 80s episodes much more than the 70s episodes episodes they have played. It's the late 80s that I hate. They don't need to go past 1984. Also, they need to play some damn disco episodes from the late 70s. lol

i agree. i prefer the episodes until about 1988 beyond that i'm not too keen though i'd probably still watch them. let's hope they don't start showing ones from the 90's. by the way, i agree with what you said about freddie jackson. he did way too many slow jams for me back then. "jam" is a nice song but i need something faster damn it.

Yeah the cat with the shades is Louie, he always makes me LOL when they show him dancing, he always does something funny. The stage slide and MJ moves are his trademarks. Also he does alot of pointing in the air, you can tell he was having a real good time.

I wanna dance with somebody from your girl is probably one of the worst tunes of the 80's with lionel's dancing on the ceiling. The greatest love of all
was also barfarama. I agree with you dawg. Whitney may have had a great voice but her music was boring as hell. I don't know if clive was to blame but her music had no soul like chaka and lady t of the 80's.

I like the early 80s episodes. The one a few weeks ago with Vanity 6 and Carl Carlton was GREAT.By the late 80s,I had a feeling that Soul Train was on it's way out.I remember that's when I sorta stopped watching it,lol. In the 70s and early 80s,'Soul Train' was mandatory viewing. We didn't have things like BET and MTV back then,so Soul Train was our only way of keeping up with these artists.

Exactly! She just fucked up and weakened the second half of the decade.

Little miss goodie two shoes was always late getting into things. She was late getting into sex. Hell, she didn't get into drugs until everyone else was getting out of them. She should have started out on drugs at the beginning of her career. Maybe she could have gotten high with Rick James and he could have produced and made her a star instead of the folks she ended up with that made her a dull ass rhythmless mess.
