By saying that these people aren't soul or r&b artists because the primary soul and r&b audience isn't buying them is putting the cart before the horse.

Right here shows the idiocy of your comments.

You can't be considered a part of a genre when the genre doesn't even recognize your music, much less embrace it on a large scale. You actually think it makes sense to name acts as the greatest ever in a genre in which they have no presence. If someone was to ask for a list of the greatest rock acts of all time and I named Jesse Johnson or Ernie Isley (someone who didn't remotely register with rock acts), would you equally say it makes sense to list them?

It not only comes off as condescending but spectacularly ignorant of the genre. You tried to whine and throw out some basless claim of race (like there is some adverse socioeconomic consequence to being a white pop recording artist in the United States), and then ignored that I said it makes sense if Teena Marie and Lisa Stansfield are named -- not because of an unqualified comment of "I feel it's a soul music style of singing," but because soul music auidences responded to their music and they had a presence in the genre. Both artists had a string of hits in the soul music market, and Marie is particularly held in a high level of regard and respect.

So no it has nothing to do with race -- you tried to make it a race issue because of your ignorance of the subject and you had nothing else by which to defend your shoddy logic.

Okay people, one more time with this list:
1. Whitney Houston
2. Mariah Carey
3. Aretha Franklin
4. Toni Braxton
5. Janet Jackson
6. Diana Ross
7. Teena Marie
8. Mary J. Blige
9. Chaka Khan
10. Anita Baker
[Edited 3/28/07 16:54pm]

Kids today! rolleyes Anyway, let a veteran show you a better list:

1. Aretha Frankin
2. Tina Turner
3. Chaka Khan
4. Jennifer Holiday
5. Teena Marie
6. Patti LeBelle
7. Shirley Murdoch
8. Gladys Knight
9. Betty Wright
10. Phyllis Hyman

I'll admit that both Jennifer Holiday and Shirley Murdock (with a k NOT A h) are good singers but what I'm looking for is some longevity. Shirley had 2 big hits and Jennifer had 1 monstrous hit and you want to claim them as the greatest? Please! Just look at your list. I'll give you everyone else but those 2. Not that I don't like them, but their short careers doesn' qualify me as being one of the greats. That's like saying Eugene Wilde is one of the greatest male singers which isn't true. Evidently, you ran out of names. So, I'll help you out. How about Deneice Williams, Vanessa Williams, Diana Ross, Mary J. Blige, Anita Baker, Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, Patti Austin, Martha Reeves, Minnie Riperton, Etta James, or Whitney Houston. Care to change your mind now?
Peace and be wild!

the thread does say "top ten r&b female acts of all time" does it not? not just "top ten r&b female acts of the last 25 years" correct?

The thread also implies that you're going to make reasonable choices on your list.

BTW, I never said I would have a problem with Tina Turner being named. But unlike you, I have enough knowledge to make an informed opinion.

Since you're imitating the deus ex machina X-Man that is your avatar, is it fair for me to call Jesse Johnson a rock artist? BTW, nice dodge on the Teena Marie/Lisa Stansfield comment I made.

since you're calling yourself "Najee" is it okay for me to assume that your preference for Jazz is watered-down Kenny G style elevator music?

1. My list is based on soul power, not mainstream crossover pop appeal.

2. There is no way in hell that I'm put Whitney within the Top 10 of my list, simple because she was never soulful enough to begin with.no no no!

3. Yes, I can go along with Mariah & Anita. I just wouldn't rank them in the Top 10.

4. Mary J. Blige is hip-hop, not traditional R&B (as in Rhythm & Blues). disbelief

5. Remember that you said you're looking for longevity? Well, Minnie Riperton didn't last too long neither. But at less she'll rank higher than others.

6. Ranking R&B female acts within a Top 10 isn't easy. We needs a Top 20 at the least.
