i got to watch the show this week (why on earth channel 5 didn't show it last week, i have no clue...). i thought this week's episode was kinna lame--woulda been better if run dmc and the dazz band got to perform live. the bit with the make-a-wish kid was really sweet, though. the boy was groovin!

Man, we wore some silly looking stuff back then, but you couldn't tell us we weren't clean!!

The Soul Train awards were pretty lame. Mainly due to the fact that half of the winners weren't even there and the lip syncing (sp?)! You would think after 20 years someone would re-vamp it. Either that or just not have a half-ass production!

OK, this will probably be controversial but oh well.

This episode was ok but nothing spectacular. Overall, I enjoyed the episode, however Run DMC, changed the vibe of the show for me and not in a good way. Though I was familiar with "Rock Box", the upbeat rhythm of the Funk and RnB from the Music of the show and the performances of the Dazz Band was lost when they performed. Even the audience stoppped dancing and just basically stood there and sort of bopped to the beat.The whole vibe changed and it was just a preview of what was to come in the future.

I like Run DMC and thought the performances were good, however the Hip Hop element seemed just as much out of place as the Huey Lewis video, if not MORE so. Just my opinion.

I was prepared. I knew previously that the damn parade was going to be on WGN that afternoon so I watched it on my local channel that night. On Friday and Saturday nights, I never have my TV on because I usually drink and listen to music. This Saturday was no exception. By the time "Soul Train" came on, I had about 15 or 16 beers and was fucked up. I had to watch it again Sunday morning to remember what was on it.

Anyway, this episode was OK. It was great seeing the dancers dancing to The Barkays. The Dazz Band were great but Run DMC absolutely did the wrong songs. "30 Days" and "Hard Times" would have been better choices. The Huey Lewis video was totally out of place. I did enjoy watching the little boy dancing with the Asian girl and the guy with all the masks. I remember seeing that when it first aired.

That was during the time that people were accusing Don Cornelius of "taking the soul out of Soul Train". More pop/rock songs were being played on the songs (even pop songs that were never played on R&B radio), more white dancers were brought in, and a lot of the black lady dancers had lost their rhythm. Just look at the Soul Train line, those black girls were as stiff as white girls. The black guys were still getting down but more and more of them started doing more of that ballet looking shit. Hell, it was like watching Gene Anthony Ray on "Fame". This is around the era where we started comparing the dancers on "Soul Train" to the dancers on our local show "Black Gold".....which "Soul Train" couldn't touch.



Judging by the songs played on that episode, it was late summer to early fall of 1984. "Freakshow On The Dance Floor" and "Dancing In The Sheets" were fairly new at the time. Both songs by both The Dazz Band and Run DMC were totally out of style when that episode originally aired. (A common thing about Soul Train that us here in Mississippi used to notice. We got off back then. ) It was about time for The Dazz Band to come out with "Let It All Blow" from their next album and "30 Days" by Run DMC was all over the radio during that time....as one last song released as a single from their first album. It wouldn't be much longer till the first single to their next album was released. During that time, it seems like Soul Train would play it safe and wait to see if something became a hit before they played it. It was in it's first early stages of going downhill. When Shitney came along the next year and fucked up music by being such a boring influence on new artists, the show really started getting shitty.....it became almost the "Pop Train".

As for the soul train episode, you had to love the dazz band jamming in their
church suits. Joystick was one of my favorite albums then and the dazz were at
their peak with this album. Swoop was the shit too. I never got to see the dazz
perform live until the united we funk all stars tour.

Also isn't it ironic some 22 years ago run dmc and rap was considered
the specialty rather than the norm? Now it is the other way around.
Someone please help keep that funk alive.
