Why does derivative have to be bad? Yes, it sounds like he stole his style from Al Green in the 70s and made a record like that. Again, that's not a bad thing. I like that style.

I just think there's too many people around here who think that great music is all about pure innovation, like Bjork and Radiohead and shit like that. They're innovative, but they can't write a song I can relate to. Music can be thought provoking, but it has to be emotional too.

Derivative is bad when it's uninteresting. The strains of Al Green I heard didn't sound very interesting. It's kinda like Billy Joel. I don't find his Ray Charles jocking very interesting.

Now Corey Glover is also derivative of Al Green and I'm always bowled over with all his stuff. (I liked Darius Rucker's CD too, but that might have gone the way of Remy Shand)!

Naw, Elton's said these type of comments about Ryan Adams, Ben Folds, and John Mayer...

You see the pattern there, don't you? Come on, Elton was so enthused about the Backstreet Boys a couple of years back, it was quite clear he digs them for reasons other than music.

Why does derivative have to be bad?

It's not, unless you make an entire career out of it, a la Mr. Kravitz.

I agree with ya there. Except I'd say that Radiohead has plenty of emotional music. If not for that I might be annoyed by Thom Yorke's voice. There's so much melancholy pain there...
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Yeah, that's how I feel about Tom Waits. If it wasn't for his pure emotion and good songwriting, I would have a very hard time listening to his voice!
