Favorite grunge band Never mind that the term "grunge" is widely debated due to differing styles between all the bands tagged as such. To those that actually dug/dig it, who is your favorite band from the 'genre' and why?

Nirvana...headbang music, but with a melody. The lyrics are poetry. GREAT band.

This one is simple for me: Stone Temple Pilots. IMO, they featured the genre's best vocalist and best songs (e.g., "Plush," "Big Empty," and, of course, "Interstate Love Song"). I think they were more melodic than Nirvana and Pearl Jam and I like that they didn't take themselves as seriously. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

it's between Alice in Chains and SoundGarden, Nirvana may have gotten the title but they were more punk rock to me.

Smashing Pumpkins
eventhough they totally suck live, their catalogue contains interstellar songs. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

PEARL JAM!!!
But I also like StoneTemplePilots & Soundgarden. Nirvana is really good band, but I don't like their lyrics, too cynical and angry for me, Kurt Cobain isn't an idol for me. [Edited 3/27/07 6:02am]

AIC & Soundgarden are my number one & two(although AIC is more metal than grunge, IMO). When it comes to vocals, Layne Staley(RIP) and Chris Cornell own the rest.

Plus.. ... the Pilots aren't my favorite, though. Great band (at least when they found their own identity with Purple), but I'm more of a Soundgarden girl myself (hell, just look at my myspace ). Then again, I only have Pearl Jam's first two albums, so that may or may not change.
