My estimate of Amy selling 100,000 copies when all is said and done might be a little conservative apparently.

Not really crazy about the album at all, its alot of the same recylced RB beats and samples, MUSIQ is one of those artists capable of so much more but he always seem to be a let down. He was OK that one night i saw him at the PRINCE aftershow in NYC's World Club.

There are a handful--literally 5 songs I like by Musiq but I'm basically over him. I don't get the love for the My Buddy. Hasn't he done that theme a few times? Anyway, I guess he's alright but he doesn't grab my attention.

B2B was damn near sold out in every retail chain I went to on the first day. I'm so happy to see her in the top 10!

His previous album was a big disapointment,so I was hoping this
one would be better. confused
I'll keep on enjoying his previous work and I hope some
of his new songs are good, but some of U allready made it clear I
could be disapointed once again...

I knew there was a lot of buzz about her (all her NYC shows sold out in minutes it seems), but I didn't think she would outsell Lily Allen. Good for her.

The thing that bugs me about them is that i saw reports the other day, that Lily Allen was saying she was tired and needed a break and Amy's dad was saying his daughter needed a break from the attention. WTF? this bugs me, i understand the pressure and all that, but lets be real, where not talking pressure like "george Michaels faith" when he decided to get away from things, you sold 100,000 records, deal with it.

But aren't they platinum-selling artists in the U.K.? And they're both really young, right? Maybe it's all too much, too soon.

Chart Greets Sweet Sounds of Musiq
March 21, 2007

MUSIQ SOULCHILD
Editor: Keith Caulfield; Contributors: Anthony Colombo, Gary Trust, Alex Vitoulis; Editorial Director: Geoff Mayfield

Musiq Soulchild takes his "Luvanmusic" straight to No. 1 on The Billboard 200, giving the R&B singer his second chart-topper ... Five other acts' albums debut in the top 10 this week: Lloyd, Rich Boy, Neil Young, Amy Winehouse and 8Ball & MJG. The big chart also greets new entries from Brit import James Morrison, rockers Type O Negative, the Fratellis, the latest "Radio Disney Jams" set and the newest from Aqualung ... In Progress Reports, we've got updates on Daughtry, 30 Seconds to Mars, the Bravery and new country act Flynnville Train.

FLASH POINTS

• As his "Buddy" single becomes his biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit since 2002, Musiq Soulchild celebrates his second No. 1 album on The Billboard 200 as "Luvanmusiq" opens atop the chart with 149,000. "Buddy" is already in the top five on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, his best showing since "Dontchange" peaked at No. 3 in 2002 ... Musiq's last set, "Soulstar," debuted and peaked at No. 13 on The Billboard 200 in 2003 with 156,000. Though his latest album can't beat the first-week sales of "Soulstar," keep in mind that that album's opening sales frame was elevated because of its release in the thick of the Christmas shopping rush in December 2003 ... His 2002 set, "Juslisen (Just Listen)," opened at No. 1 with 260,000 ... Musiq's just one of five R&B or hip-hop artists that debut in the top 10 this week. He joins R&B singer Lloyd at No. 2, rapper Rich Boy at No. 3, British R&B singer Amy Winehouse at No. 7 and rap act 8Ball & MJG at No. 8. Lloyd's last album, 2004's "Southside," only spent 14 weeks on the chart after it bowed and peaked at No. 11 with 67,000. This time around, Lloyd has a massive hit single with "You." It's in the top 25 on the CHR/Top 40 airplay chart and in the top 10 on The Billboard Hot 100. The tune has already hit No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

• Powered by his "Throw Some D's" hit single, rapper Rich Boy starts at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 with 112,000 units. The track has hit the top three on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and is climbing up The Billboard Hot 100. The Mobile, Ala., native's debut album features production from Polow Da Don, Lil Jon, Brian Kidd and Needlz. He's currently on tour with Lil Wayne, Birdman, Young Jeezy and Jim Jones with dates lined up through April ... A few slots down The Billboard 200 we greet the arrival of 8Ball & MJG's "Ridin' High" at No. 8 with 50,000 units. Collectively, the two rappers have charted 10 albums on The Billboard 200. The duo's last chart entry, 2004's "Living Legends," debuted and peaked at No. 3 on that list.

• Neil Young brings his latest archival live album to The Billboard 200 as "Live at Massey Hall" starts at No. 6 with 57,000. The album captures a 1971 acoustic concert and also comes in a CD/DVD package; the DVD includes the entire show. Young's last archive set, "Live at the Fillmore East: March 6 & 7, 1970," debuted and peaked at No. 55 last November. It bowed with 20,000 units ... At No. 7, British R&B sensation Amy Winehouse starts with her "Back to Black" album, selling 51,000. Digital retail accounted for 31% of the set's first-week sales. Her single "You Know I'm No Good" has gotten love from MTV, VH1 and VH1 Soul. MTV played it 18 times for the week ending March 18, making it the eighth-most-played clip on the network. On VH1 Soul, it garnered 20 plays ... Another British import, singer/songwriter James Morrison, starts at No. 24 with "Undiscovered" (24,000). A whopping 47% of his sales came from digital retailers. This week, his single "You Give Me Something" debuts at No. 39 on the Hot AC/Adult Top 40 chart and No. 30 on the Triple A chart. The song was ranked in the top 10 at two radio stations last week: WJZW Washington, D.C., and WXRV Boston.

• Other debuts on The Billboard 200 this week include ... Type O Negative's "Dead Again" at No. 27 with 22,000. It's the band's highest-charting album, but not its best sales week. Its 1999 set "World Coming Down" launched with 41,000 but started at No. 39 ... The Fratellis' "Costello Music" bows at No. 48 with 15,000. The set is partially powered by the band's fame thanks to the use of its "Flathead" song in Apple iTunes TV commercials. The tune (see Progress Reports, below) is bubbling under the Alternative/Modern Rock chart ... The ninth volume of the "Radio Disney Jams" series starts at No. 56 with 14,000. The set features songs by Daniel Powter, Natasha Bedingfield, Gwen Stefani, Rascal Flatts, Drew Seeley and a live version of "Start of Something New" by the "High School Musical" cast ... Aqualung's new album, "Memory Man," hits The Billboard 200 at No. 88. The act's last set, "Strange and Beautiful," spent nine weeks on the big chart, peaking at No. 108 in early 2006 ... At No. 120, the compilation "Stax 50th - A 50th Anniversary Celebration" bows with 7,000. The set features such classics as "Green Onions" by Booker T. & the MG's, "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding and "I'll Take You There" by the Staple Singers.

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 8.50 million units
• DOWN 1.8% from last issue's charts: 8.66 million units

• This week: The top three albums sell more than 100,000 copies.
• This week last year on The Billboard 200: the "High School Musical" soundtrack returned to No. 1 (142,000) while the biggest debut was from E-40's "My Ghetto Report Card" (No. 3; 94,000). Only the top two albums sold more than 100,000 units.

BORDERLINES

• The No. 20 album this week, Corinne Bailey Rae's "Corinne Bailey Rae" (Capitol), sold 34,000.
• The No. 20 album for the same week of 2006, Hawthorne Heights' "If Only You Were Lonely" (Victory), sold 34,000.
• Average total of the No. 20 album for the same week of the year during the past 10 years (1998-2007): 45,543.

PROGRESS REPORTS

• Chris Daughtry is the second "American Idol" contestant to top the CHR/Top 40 chart (following Kelly Clarkson), as his band Daughtry rises 3-1 with "It's Not Over" ... Daughtry continues a resurgence by rock bands at the format, becoming the third to top the chart in the last five months, following Nickelback and Hinder. The last time three different rock groups led the list during a shorter span was from late 2001 through March 2002, when "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback (10 weeks), "Hey Baby" by No Doubt (one week) and "In the End" by Linkin Park (five weeks) all reached the top in succession ... "Over" displaces Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around ... Comes Around," which becomes the first song to top the CHR/Top 40 list for only a single week since Rihanna's "SOS" spent a solitary frame at No. 1 on the chart dated April 22, 2006.

• 30 Seconds to Mars grabs its first Alternative/Modern Rock No. 1 as "From Yesterday" skips 3-1 in its 22nd chart week. "Yesterday" is the follow-up to "The Kill (Bury Me)," which recently set the Alternative/Modern Rock record for most weeks on the chart (52). It peaked at No. 3 in August ... At the very bottom of the chart, at No. 40, the Bravery debuts with its new single "Time Won't Let Me Go." It's the lead track from the band's album "The Sun and the Moon," due May 22 ... Titles that are bubbling under the Alternative/Modern Rock chart that are likely to debut in the coming weeks include Say Anything's "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too," the Fratellis' "Flathead" and Fall Out Boy's "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs."

• On Hot Country Songs, Kenny Chesney holds at No. 1 with "Beer in Mexico" while Carrie Underwood slides 6-3 with "Wasted." That gives the "American Idol" champ her fourth consecutive top three single on the Hot Country Songs chart, following "Jesus, Take the Wheel," "Before He Cheats" and "Don't Forget to Remember Me" ... Little Big Town nabs its sixth top 40 hit on the Hot Country Songs chart as "A Little More You" hops 46-39 ... Down at No. 59, new act Flynnville Train bows with "Last Good Time." The Show Dog Nashville act is working on its major-label debut, which is due later this year.

Musiq Soulchild (born Talib Johnson on September 16, 1977.[1] in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), is an American neo soul and R&B artist, and was one of the most popular artists on the Def Soul label. In 2001, he dropped the "Soulchild" from his moniker and began referring to himself simply as "Musiq", stating that he had not yet mastered his craft, and thus was not yet "music's soulchild". However, he reassumed the "Soulchild" surname with the release of the song Buddy in 2007. Besides being a successful recording artist, Musiq is notable for his disregard for normal rules of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, which can be seen in the titles of his singles and his albums.

trying to be a one name with the title of music is pretty hoity toity
and 'soulchild' at that.
the words in his music seem so desperate, i always imagine him talking that scratch to some way out of his league woman and her giving him the cold shoulder like she would to a homeless person.
Imagine her suprise when he takes off those shades falloff

Modest Mouse in the House, Vies With Joss Stone for #1

March 21, 2007

And the Mouse gets the cheese.

Epic indie faves Modest Mouse's self-deprecatingly titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is off and sailing this week, as the band's active fan base turned out in impressive numbers, with a big first day putting it on target to a one-week total of between 120-130k and a shot at #1 on next week's HITS album chart.

The estimate is based on one-day sales reports from those retailers around the country still standing after this morning's Wall Street Journal story on the demise of the record industry.

The album is the follow-up to the Seattle alternadarlings' surprise 2004 platinum album Good News for People Who Love Bad News.

Introducing Joss Stone, the third album on Virgin for the 19-year-old U.K. soul diva, will give it some pretty stiff competition, with first-day sales putting it at around 100-110k , enough to make it a battle for #1 on next Tuesday's album tally.

The big story of the week, though, belongs to another American Idol alum, Elliott Yamin, whose new album for pubbery Sony/ATV's Hickory label could go as high as 90k, a total about half of what Sanjaya might do if he released an album tomorrow. Congrats to manager, ex-HITS flunkie and Wall Street Journal source Jeff Rabhan, who is expected to make a ton on T-shirt sales.

Universal Motown's Marquez Houston is the latest in Sylvia Rhone's stable of stars, with a first-week total that could climb to between 60-65k.

Other possible chart newcomers include Priority/Capitol's C-Murder and Universal Republic's Baby Boy Da Prince.

The market was down 2% vs last week, down 19% vs same week last year and now down 17% year-to-date.

eek

My estimate of Amy selling 100,000 copies when all is said and done might be a little conservative apparently.

I'm shocked she didn't debut higher and/or sell more copies with the constant hype and advertisment (and I'm just talking about web advertisements...she probably has a ton of TV commericals, too).

I live in a cave so I haven't seen any of that. I didn't even know MTV was playing the video. All I saw was the excellent reviews and the 100+ threads on the org. lol
