To be fair, there just isn't any footage of this. Not even showing Quincy Jones doing all the work or something else contrary to the topic of this thread. The only thing we have is those demos that got released on the remastered editions and ultimate boxset. After all these years, I would have figured we would have seen actual footage of him picking up an instrument and playing, fooling around, tinkering, or jamming at a concert, a rehearsal, making of the video, at the house or something! I just think it's odd that there are only photos, stories and album credits. I would like to see him actually do something. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Exactly, these guys are so into appearing great, I just can't imagine we wouldn't have seen it. Unless Mike has incredible musical integrity and doesn't play just for show. But I really doubt it since he's lip synced so many times and seems to believe he's nearly god-like, and he's into creating the biggest spectacle possible. Its a fair argumet to say it would get in the way of his dancing, but it didn't hurt Prince or Elvis, and a dancer as good as Mike could find a way, too. My Legacy

He doesn't want to fuck it up onstage, the same reason why he lipsyncs. Of course, he hasn't really put together a show that would have concentrated on the music since he was with his brothers (or the Bad tour, but the first half of it was basically him doing the Jacksons stuff solo), so why would he be playing an instrument onstage when there has been also numbers with backing tracks for his vocals? I guess that would be really stretching it.
But yeah, he grew up as the singer and the dancer in the band. People of his fame level can afford to just give ideas to professional session musicians and producers who will create the proper instrumentation over some preliminary doodlings.

I've never really understood all the fuss about Michael Jackson not playing instruments on stage.

I guess Michael figures that why stand there holding a guitar or sitting at a piano when he could be dancing and creating a better show that way. If he's holding a guitar, he wont be able to dance as much. It would take away from the quality of the show, in his opinion. He has no reason to play instruments on stage. Why would he? The only reason would be to show off. That why JT and Madonna play instruments on stage. "Hey look at me, I can play the gee-tar". It shows no musical integrity and really, really takes away from the show. Both performers I mentioned lose credibility, style and class when they show off like that. Michael Jackson is not one to do such a thing.

He doesn't have to play on stage. Like I said, I've never seen him jam around at rehearsal just for fun but somehow I've seen Mos Def play drums and Natalie Cole play piano. Two things I never would have imagined and thoroughly enjoyed.
I don't think playing an instrument during a performance necessarily has to be a form of showing off. When you have a song you're close to—-especially when you wrote it, arranged it and produced it--there’s an intimacy and a connection that you have to that song. You want to musically convey that song to your audience in another way. So you grab a guitar or sit at the piano or pick up a bass. I don’t understand how playing an instrument takes away from the quality of the show, especially when we’re talking about someone who clearly has no problem lip synching. I enjoy watching Prince just as much if not more, when he plays guitar and while we can make the argument that he’s a musician and Michael’s a performer, I’ll just reiterate that I find it odd to have not seen him play an instrument in any capacity whatsoever other than the tambourine. It doesn’t keep me up at night. But given the topic, I found it interesting. [Edited 3/21/07 5:43am] Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I've seen footage of Michael Jackson "trying" to play guitar, and he can't play a guitar, CANNOT PLAY A GUITAR. So scratch that one of your list, and no I won't show the video or provide a link, some things you must hide from Prince fans.

If the other brothers canplay other instruments that aren't their main ones (guitarist Tito playing the piano and percussionist/keyboardist, Randy playing the bass and guitar and not to mention Marlon playing the bass and Jackie playing keyboards, who both never had a performing instrument) what makes it so hard to believe Mile couldn't plat somethin) Some other cool photos I found. I actually respect him for not pretending to do more than he does. He could easily go the Madonna/Justin route and pretend he's a multi-instrumentalist by learning three chords.
But instead he enlists some of the greatest musicians in the world to play his music, so that it can be as good as possible. My Legacy

Not saying that this is a bad idea for a thread, but what is the big deal about the public knowing if Micheal can play instruments or not? Are we trying to make a comparison to him and Prince? Should Micheal do a CD by himself playing all the instruments?
I remember a few years ago when Madonna did her tour and whipped out a black Les Paul, the Prince comparisons instantly hit the org: "She can't play as good as Prince", etc...of course not, she's not a guitarist. MJ was one of the baddest (no pun intended) entertainers around. Him onstage with a guitar or a bass would have taken away from what people really wanted to see him do. Dance and sing. Not saying anyone has to agree, but that's my opinion.
