What I got from the 60 Minutes piece is that Simon Cowell is pure and simply a businessman.
And apparently a very successful one. Deal with it.

that's what makes his statements true, but kind of ridiculous, since Bruce never claimed to be an industry mogul, just a musician. So why would they be compared at all?

maybe the quote is a bit out of context, though

The naked quote comes off as something other than it really is.

You can watch the 60 Minutes interview here:

Once you hear the quote in context, it makes sense.

He's a middle man....yeah, American record companies need more of those. I get with Simon does and frankly, I wouldn't put him and Springsteen (who I'm not a big fan of) in the same sentence. He doesn't do all that much but brag. It's kind of sad and when Sanjaya is the next American Idol and he sells records, is that something to be proud of?

You can debate whether Simon Cowell is pushing a load of crap onto the marketplace, but people are buying it in droves.

That's my point. Does anybody actually believe any of the Idol music really has any musical value?

If it has value to the people who enjoy it, then yes. And what difference does it make to anyone else?

I think the American Idol contestants are kind of "guilty until proven innocent" in terms of the fact taht a lot of people expect them to be cheesy, schlocky, here-today-gone-tomorrow crap until they have a career (like Kelly Clarkson and like Carrie Underwood seems to be starting to). Most of the contestants are glorified karaoke singers.

That said, tons of people love McDonalds, but that doesn't make it good.

exactly, there's nothing wrong with Simon saying he's bigger than Springsteen, but Bruce could easily counter that there hasn't been one single classic Idol album and Bruce has done several.

But I don't think Simon's saying he's better, just that he's a big moneymaker for his label, and that's true.

He also said he likes Kelly Clarkson better than Dylan. But he said he meant no disrespect, he's just superficial. lol

people vote with their dollars and apetites, so if that many people enjoy it and think it's good, then it's good (to them).

Well, Cowell's right. He has sold more records than Bruce, but I can't think of any single act Cowell has inflicted on the world that has sold as many records as Bruce has.
