Lenny

What do you guys think of lenny kravitz? i will probably get a serious beating asking this question because it doesnt seem that a lot of people like him, most think of him as rockstar with no talent.

But, i just bought his last cd, Baptism, one of best things i ever heard, sounds very Prince-like, the album is very hard with some nice guitars en very slow at the same time, i also like his other albums.

you guys know a lot about good music (your on a prince-site smile says enough), tell me your opinion.

Well he has some good stuff, but he ain't all that. Baptism is a pretty crappy record all and all, imo.

To say Lenny Kravitz doesn't have any talent is pretty absurd. I think a lot of the beating he has had to take is because he became famous during an era when everyone was already griping about how the end of rock'n'roll superstars has already ended. Because he managed to become quite big that obviously meant he must be totally worthless, like the rest of pop performers. He has had his own ill-judgements, but not to the level of deserving all the dismay he's received (and he's had that since the early-90s).

I've never understood the John Lennon / Jimi Hendrix -rip-off accusations either. He is not any less, or more, influenced by artists of the past than your average rocker. He just started using the "retro"-approach during a time when you weren't supposed to be retro, critics would openly call him out for it. Now all of a sudden you have a million "garage rock" bands all around the world doing the same thing with less well-written songs and less charisma than him and get praised for it.

confused

Oh yeah, and Baptism is crap. smile

Love the first 2 records cover to cover and some of the 3rd. Are you gonna go my way is a great led zep tune. I am hoping he gets back to his roots and does something more soulful, less polished on the next cd. He doesnt seem to be feeling it lately. I liked "California" and some of the new stuff, but some is dreadful.

Lenny seems pretty well liked around here (I think) but @ some point the P comparisons are ridiculous. I don't hear anything on Baptism that reminds me of P (except the bitch straightening his hair for the album cover disbelief ).

That said I dig Lenny, love every album from "Mama Said" to "5", he completely fell off w/ "Lenny" & came back somewhat w/ "Baptism" - I'm waiting to see what he does next, hopefully it'll be a step up. & he's great live...

I like maybe a few songs of his, but overall I really don't like/care for him. To me his is just another Prince wanna be.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Mama Said, Greatest Hits, and Are You Gonna Go My Way are the only three I've had an interest for. Mostly all of his albums are spotty, in my book. but nevertheless, this dude can rock.

His first four albums and their respective b-sides are all classics. I don't really fuck with him beyond that. "California" was cool tho.

I LOVE Lenny, and I don't get why so many around here hate him. I think all of his albums are great, imo- very little filler.
My only contention with Lenny is that 2 of 3 times I saw him live, I was disappointed. First was at PNC Arts Center in NJ- he was headlining for a triple bill (someone please remind me who the others were) and he came out, opened great and then disappeared after 3 songs. They said he had heat exhustion. 2nd time- same venue- a year or 2 later, he was great. Then I saw him in 2005 opening for Aerosmith- very, very disappointing (so were Aerosmith but that's another story). Again this is only IMHO but it seemed he was choosing a set list based on an "Aerosmith" crowd, and I was really let down. I had been playing him in the car on the way there, and psyching up my friend who had never seen him live- "we should hear this, maybe this, etc" and I was dead wrong.
That being said, I'm sure I will try again to see him live someday. His albums are good enough, that I still love Lenny....

Well, even if you do get a serious beating, you really should not give a dayum about what anyone says in that case.
I love Lenny and I think he has a lot of amazing talent.
Ok, so I didn't like Baptism and Circus that much. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have talent!
I mean come on, some of Prince's stuff is not always EXCELLENT either.....artists have their ups and downs when it comes to their creative ability, which is only HUMAN if you think about it.

Lenny is retro and that's what he is all about, bring RETRO and soulful rock'n roll back to the scene....which he actually did succeed in doing, but I don't think he got the right amount of credit for it.
Yes, he is a poser, but RIGHTFULLY so.
The man is GORGEOUS and he has his own unique dress style.

I have seen him concert, and I can tell you that it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. He had such presence, charisma, amazing voice and I never ever got bored during that concert.
Cree Summer did the opening to that concert and she was like a female version of him. Pity her record label dropped her, she was really awesome.

I am really looking forward to him coming out with a new album and I am hoping that it will be more soulful and back to the style he used on his first 2 albums.
They rocked.

I didn't say I didn't like it at all, but compared to his other albums, I didn't think it was THAT good.
Maybe it just felt too sad for me somehow.....or maybe it just didn't appeal to me at the time....maybe I should listen to it again! lol

I have Cree's CD and I like it. I haven't listened to it in awhile but am looking at it now and am about to put it on. IIRC, my favorite song on this album was Mean Sleep.

Gotta give Lenny credit too for that song he co-wrote with Mick Jagger for his last solo effort, "God Gave Me Everything"- his input to that CD helped a lot.

I really like him. I saw him open for Aerosmith last year, and his set was AWESOME! It was funky, and it rocked. He puts on a great show, and I love many of his songs. He also has a unique voice, which always catches my attention.

I think Lenny is cool, but I'd like to hear him funk out more. I'd also like for him to include his whole band on a CD..As a guitar and bass player he's good, but I was never crazy about his drumming or keyboard playing.

He's been talking about this funk record for 12 years..he ought to put out independently..I'm dying to hear it.
