Pure rock? I'd go with Corey Glover.

He has a great voice. He was excellent in as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. nod

That doesn't mean they aren't still black.

I see your point with Zach. But Richie Havens?!? THAT's new info for me! I never notice. But I do know that the young man had talent & could have been bigger if he didn't die so soon.

No, it's on the current tour that started at the end of last year. A friend of mine is in it. You should check it out! I believe it's book for the rest of the year at least.

My daughter suggested that I throw these names out there for discussion.

Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage
Byron Davis of God Forbid

Not necessarily as a "Best" but at the very least to make people aware that they exist along with the mainstream selections.

Also don't forget Skin from Skunk Anansie. There's no reason why the list should be limited to men.

I think she's great and very striking.

Anyone who has seen Hootie & the Blowfish live in concert would know that Darius Rucker also could fit into this category.....are they pop? Yes, but there is much more to them than that....

cool

as much as i hate to admit it.....if you have listened to Darius Rucker's solo stuff you would have to put him on the list as well

Corey Glover in a play? now that is good for a laugh

Angelo Moore I like but when Chris Dowd was with Fishbone, it was clear who had the best voice in the group

Zack is Black?

Good stuff.

Havens is one of those black artists that more white people know and love more than any blacks. The early Havens records predict the kind of psycheFUNKadelicROCKisms, the Eddie Hazel/Billy bass group brings. EXTREMELY hard to find, but STONEHENGE has a cover of "Opene OUr Eyes" that predates EWF and Funkadelic and it very well might have been Eddie's insipration.

This is the kinda stuff you gotta steal from your dad or uncle's LP collection.

Good description.

Richie Havens was a big part of 60s Free Form radio.
High Flyin' Bird, Handsome Johnny and No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed were a few of his tunes that were in heavy rotation.

I saw him quite a few times in the opening act slot for many of Bill Graham's Fillmore East shows.

David Ryan Harris is cool. His 1st 1997 solo joint with "Leaves" and "If I Had A Dime" was fantastic.
