Based on his performances with the Stones. Pure Rock and Roll.

Feel free to add to the list.

I'm well aware of Billy Preston playing keyboards with The Rolling Stones on some of their albums (I think of Preston as a high-profile collaborator, not an official member) and being "the unofficial fifth Beatle." But as a solo act (on which I'm judging Preston), I feel it's a huge stretch to call him a rock performer.

Other than that, your list looks fine.

Fair enough. It was actually a hard list to build (much harder than the "other thread" that inspired it. I welcome any additions, and wholeheartedly confess my ignorance.

I actually feel this is a very good list without Billy Preston -- a lot of heavyweight names and artists who actually have made impacts in the rock/pop genre. I like it better than the white "soul" singers thread, because there have not been a lot of white artists who have made an impact in that genre, and none on the scale of Prince, Jimi Henrix, Tina Turner, etc.

Doug Pinnick...

...is the lead singer for the Rock group King's X. Loads of info here: http://www.kingsxonline.com/

What if you combined the hard rock majesty of Led Zeppelin, combined great harmonies and musicianship along with a soulful singer that could scream with the best of them. All from a 3-piece band. That'd be a close description.

An excellent creative Rock band that doesn't turn big mainstream numbers.
To paraphrase a Willie Dixon line, The public don't know but the musicians understand.

Marcus Malone is another story. A relative unknown to those unfamiliar with his United Artists release in '76 or the L.A. Rock club circuit of the 80s or the current Blues circuit in Europe.

Here's an excerpt from a review of the Marcus album...

...written by Ray Dorsey

"Marcus" (United Artists, 1976) - Possibly one of the most obscure, yet incredible metal releases ever was the 1976 debut and solitary LP by Detroit's MARCUS. The packaging of the LP is very deceptive and this, plus The fact that it received little promotion were probably the chief reasons is so sparsely known. With a cover featuring lead singer Marcus Malone decked out in a Rick James-type outfit, coupled with a release during the formation of the disco era, it was no wonder that this platter often ended up filed in record stores' "soul or r&b" sections! However, the careful metal conessieur, upon looking at the back of the jacket, can spy a couple things that make him/her take note. The first eye-opener is the band's line-up: it featured 3 lead guitarists, Gene Bloch, Randall David and Jack Weber. Not many disco or soul bands feature triple axeters, now do they!? Secondly, a sharp metaller would instantly recognize the bass player on most cuts, Tim Bogert (a veteran of countless heavy units like Cactus, Vanilla Fudge & others). MARCUS' drummer was Dandy "Star" Holmes, later to be involved in more dance-oriented material. With all of this, though, even the most astute hard rock fanatic would have no idea of how monumental the record is that awaits within this subtle cover!

Opening with a mellow keyboard intro, MARCUS erupts into Side One and "Black Magic." Using a riff similar to Purple's "Space Truckin'" but in no way a copy, it's immediate to the listener that they have a powerhouse on their hands! Bloch, David and Weber all stay close enough to the main rhythm to be tight, but each layer casual licks and fills over the other to become the ultimate 3-way attack team. Malone's vocals are some of the most unique ever, calling to mind a great combination of Steven Tyler and old Glen Hughes. What a song, but it's just the beginning.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Doug Pinnick and moreso Marcus Malone are prime examples of why you shouldn't let anyone fool you into believing that "talent" (or even something you simply like) can only be justified by the number of records sold or a chart position. Nothing could be further from the truth.
For those with a musically adventurous spirit, there are scores of gems out there to be found that won't reveal themselves by simply scouring the Top 100 in any genre.

I've had Gretchen Goes to Nebraska for years - love that album. I'm going to get more one of these days. I saw them as well about two years ago at a local club, and they were absolutely fantastic, though I didn't know any of the material they played.

You're welcome. thumbs up!

Some more Doug (or dUg) Pinnick trivia.
A post he made while subbing for Corey Clover on a Living Colour tour last year:

"So far things are getting better for me, yeah I was a bit nervous, LOL! (panic attacks!) actually..LOL! the first show was a warm up in Berlin, I did my best, it was OK I guess, in Dresden germany was a bit difficult, I havent fronted a band since I was 19..LOL! and its hard to work a crowd when they dont speak english, LOL! Amsterdam? I had a blast!! I felt more comfy there and I knew the words better, its hard to own someone elses words, but hey! I am up for the challenge, Zoetermeer,I realy felt almost totally comfortable...we drove all night and all day to Budapest to tomorrow's show at a festival with Iggy Pop and Prodigy... the rock goes on, and this has been a wonderful experience for me so far,.. I stopped smoking weed for this tour and after years of smoking my voice is getting back to normal, the way it was before i started smoking in 1987.. ( I still eat brownies though LOL!). I never realized how much smoking fucked up your voice...I am so glad I got this gig and I stopped, singing is fun again and the passion is returning..I love doing one or the other (bass or vocals) and this has helped me to concentrate on singing, this has been so good for me! thank you LC!!!! yeah bootlegs?! the soundman is recording all the shows, we plan on putting them up for download (at least thats what Will said.. so you guys will get to hear something..I now I will have them all and you know me, I cant keep anything to myself, LOL! .thanks for your love and support...may the goove be with you....dUg."

Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage
Byron Davis of God Forbid

Not necessarily as a "Best" but at the very least to make people aware that they exist along with the mainstream selections.

Jimi Hendrix
Cory Glover (Living Colour)
Tina Turner
Prince
Lenny Kravitz
Doug Pinnick (but I'll admit, I never listened to them a whole lot back in the day, but my bf is a big fan. He actually just saw them in Nov. at a little club 5 mins from our house. He and his friend hung around to talk to him a bit after the show.)

U beat me to it with Doug Pinnick - awesome, "churchy" voice. If I remember correctly (it was one of those VH1 countdown/list shows), Richie Blackmore admitted that Deep Purple wanted Doug as its lead singer but he wanted to do his own thing with King's X.
