I entirely agree - not a very good singer at all, but his voice really does suit the music perfectly. Phil Oakey is a similar example.

Anx said: another example of bad voice/good singer is stephin merritt of magnetic fields. he has all the range of a dial tone, but he writes very simple, elegant songs to suit his limitations, and his vocals end up sounding exactly as they should. beat me to it. I was just about to mention him. He can barely carry a tune at all, really, but he works around his limitations. Bill Callahan from Smog kinda has the same feel. Lou Reed ought to rate a mention here as well, I suppose. and maybe the pavement guy...Stephen Malkmus.

maybe this should be another thread, but if these are all bad voices/good singers, what's an example of someone with a good voice who's a bad singer? maybe that's a much easier question?

Lamar. Great voice, but his vocals just feel like a collection of licks rather than anything that's grown organically from the song, if that makes sense. I could name many more "soul" singers, but I don't think I can take any more abuse tonight!

Also, I am not a fan of Prince's voice, although I love many of his songs. [Edited 3/12/07 12:08pm] "Todo está bien chévere" Stevie

^ I like the sound of his voice. With a little coaching, he could have been a much better singer. Still, it all adds to the grittiness of his performances. Wanna hear me sing?

Johnny Cash--I'd say he's a so so singer with an amazing voice. This is why Walk The Line didn't work for me. Joaquin was okay, but he didn't get across the special quality of Johnny's voice, one of the greatest ever. Dylan, to me is the classic example of a great singer with a horrible voice. Neil Young Prince doesn't have the most beautiful voice Not exactly sure where Lou Reed fits in, but he deserves a mention my man Badly Drawn Boy is much the same. I don't know what's missing, but something is. Beck has a pretty good voice, but is an uninspired singer Lyle Lovett has a great voice, sings well, but is uber-limited in range My Legacy

I know someone mentioned David Bowie and I struggle with him. On some records, his voice and singing sound fantastic, and on others he sounds terrible. He's such a mixed bag, it's really hard to classify him as a "good" or "bad" singer.

I used to think he had a weird voice and wasn't a great singer. But lately I hear him as one of the best singers in rock, even though his singing isn't very rock & roll sounding. My Legacy
