2007 JUNO AWARDS - SUNDAY APRIL 1 Nelly Furtado fighting jitters ahead of Junos show Updated Fri. Mar. 30 2007 11:31 AM ET CTV.ca News Staff Nelly Furtado says the best thing about all the frenzy that goes into getting ready to host this weekend's Juno Awards is that it makes her forget about being nervous to perform. "I think that because I'm hosting, I've almost forgotten about my performance -- which is good. Usually I'm so nervous about my performance on these big award shows," she told Canada AM Friday. Furtado is doing double duty as both host and performer during the Sunday award show. She is also up for five awards, including Artist of the Year, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, and the Juno Fan Choice award. The singer has already won five Junos. And rather than worry about how many golden statues she'll be taking home this year, she's just busy trying to figure how she'll handle doing all the requisite emcee banter and costume changes. "There are a lot of segments, a lot of wardrobe changes. It's going to be a circus in my change room, anyway," she said. Furtado says she's busy putting the final touches on her opening monologue, making sure there are a few laughs and silliness. It's those opening moments that can make or break a great show, as anyone who has wilted or frozen stiff before a large crowd knows. Not that Furtado has to worry too much that the 12,000-strong crowd won't like her. Furtado is enjoying the biggest year of her career, with a best-selling album, "Loose," a single that was the biggest song on the charts of 2006 ("Promiscuous"), and plenty of media attention south of the border. Her hometown of Victoria, B.C. recently celebrated the singer/sognwriter's success by proclaiming March 21 "Nelly Furtado Day." Nelly says receiving accolades from the mayor and participating in a performance with children from her alma mater was nothing short of surreal. "It was a really real moment for me, and I was emotional and I was happy. I saw a lot of family, friends. You know, old friends from school that I hadn't seen in years, relatives, family members, and teachers. It was really, really incredible," she said. "Having that honour at Centennial Square with the mayor there in Victoria was -- it felt good. it really did feel good." For now though, Furtado is too busy to think about all that, trying to stay busy with the show preparations and trying not to let the excitement get to her. "We are busy, up to our necks in planning and preparations and I'm nervous. I'm finally nervous now," she said. Also likely getting nervous are the other artists set to perform during the two-hour broadcast Sunday night, including Nickelback, Sam Roberts, Eva Avila, Alexisonfire and The Tragically Hip. The acts will play in nine performance slots on the broadcast, interspersed with the presentation of seven Juno awards. There will also a tribute to Bob Rock, who is being inducted in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The Winnipeg-born producer has produced and engineered albums for some of the world's biggest acts, like Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Cher, Motley Crue, The Cult, Bryan Adams, and many more. | |
