Aaaaaahhhhh ! I have that album ! I will put it on RIGHT NOW !

Love the Ice-T scenes in both Breakin movies.

Watching those movies back in the days as a kid, I was so naive to believe that LA was really like that, sunny, people dressed in weird stuff, Venice Beach, fun, roller skates and all, no violence, people constantly dancing and falling in love...ahhh, sweet childhood . lol

There is some great stuff from that album. My favorite is "99 1/2" by Carol Lynn Townes.

Released in 1984 on PolyGram records.
It´s actually quite a good reflection of what was going on musically back then, partly a bit cheesy and it lacks the typical Minneapolis Funk sound of that time but it´s still a decent soundtrack album. I have it on vinyl, cassette and if I recall correctly I also have the soundtrack to part 2, Electric Boogalo,Breakin 2.

Good times ! lol

You're right. Actually, if folks go to Venice Beach they can still see people street dancing. There is a old school roller skating crew that meets in the heart of Venice Beach every weekend next to the skateboarders.

Also, you got the street kids from inner city L.A. coming down and krumping on occasion. "Boogaloo" never really died off, it's names just changed.

There's still people constantly dancing @ Venice Beach. smile

Actually a lot of people think the first Breakin was this faux Hollywood-concoted fantasy, but it is based on a lot of real b-boying and poppin' that was occuring in early 80s Los Angeles @ the time. And kids from inner city L.A. used to actually live in the Oakwood & Dogtown areas of Venice before it was gentrified. Plus, kids from inner L.A. took the bus or drove to Venice to dance or went to the dance club called The Radio in MacArthur Park (The first Breakin' does capture this but calls it 'Radiotron'). And many of those dancers were from actual L.A. crews.

There is a west coast documentary that was shot around the time of Style Wars which captures the L.A. breakdance scene before Breakin' was made entitled "Breakin' & Enterin'" [1983] (Ice T, O-Zone & dancer Boogaloo Shrimp were in that documentary) which got the attention of Hollywood, later spawning the Breakin' movies.

An Actual clip from the 1983 Breakin' & Enterin' doc which inspired the Breakin' movies :: http://www.youtube.com/wa...TIkNI-HDuY

L.A. actually has a very rich street dance tradition. And styles that were unique OUTSIDE of East Coast style b-boying such as Poppin' and Campbellocking (or Lockin') which the Breakin' movies demonstrate. It's a specific West Coast style that WAS NOT done in New York. Although Rock Steady Crew did [and still has] a West Coast chapter.

The actors who played Turbo and O-Zone are actual street dancers pulled from the streets of L.A.

The dancer who played O-Zone used to Campbellock with Re-Run and Toni Basil [yes, the chick that sang "Mickey"] in a L.A. based crew called the Campbellockers back in the 1970s. They used to wear those knee-high Ronald McDonald socks and balloon pants.

lol! Thanks. I bet that guy knows his stuff so I'll take that as a great compliment smile

Here's another longer 9-minute clip from the 1983 West Coast documentary, "Breakin' & Enterin'" which shows a young Ice-T, the dancer Turbo "Boogaloo Shrimp" in action... and, yes, ACTUAL VALLEY GIRLS @ a hip hop club in '83... lol

Check it out ---> http://www.youtube.com/wa...lU5leziYzY

Yeah, great post.

Reminded me of 100MPH´s Egyptian Lover / Ice-T thread, he also posted the same youtube thread.

Thanks to Mara for the info...my brother is also into breakdancing and poppin and teaches kids...I´ll show him your post ( he even knows some of those guys you mentioned personally from dance competitions and hip hop jams).

The Radio days, early Ice-T , Egyptian Lover, that phat LA Electro sound, ahhhhh those were the days...I´m all sentimental and nostalgic now. lol

biggrin Nice Memories!!

BTW, does anybody remember Jerry Knight's ( the "Jerry" of Ollie and Jerry) other early eighties R&B hits, "Overnight Sensation", and "Perfect Fit"?

He was also the bassist/backround vocalist in Raydio before he went solo...

smile I used to laugh every time I saw the scene where the one guy was dancing with tbe broomstick - you can totally see the strings.

Also, they had the freaking commercial for "Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo" play at the end of the movie when it ran in the theaters, LOL.
