Bebel Gilberto's "Momento" is HOT HOT HOT

Easily one of my favorite albums of the year so far, in a very young year that's already spawned some great music.

I've been a fan of Bebel's for a few years, and I loved her last album - though I don't think her previous work is anywhere as well produced as this new one.

"Memento" sounds like a cross between Sade's "Stronger Than Pride" and Beck's "Sea Change", only with a generous dose of Welbutrin and a teaspoon of honey.

"Bring Back the Love" is a great little dance tune, and her acoustic bossanova version of "Night & Day" is nothing short of beautiful.

Bebel's voice is the same as always on this album - warm, sexy, understated, lush - it's just the production that frames her vocals that raises the bar this time around.

If you've never heard her before, get ANYTHING by her. It's all good. But I think this new one is something special. Good stuff. nod

i really enjoyed the last one too, but i like this one better. there are stand-out songs on it, and the production is just a WEE bit alternative/progressive/"intelligent", but not enough that it overshadows her voice or the traditional vibe of the album. it's very well done. very young but very old.

Yes, I bought it yesterday. Didn't knew there wehere Bebel fans around here!
But it's great, better than her self titled album, I'm not sure it's up there with Tanto Tempo after one listen. Her voice is smoother than ever though, I love the titeltrack!

Quality but boring.....yawn

I'll just wait until either Thievery Corporation or Kruder & Dorfmeister make some remixes of the tracks and add some interesting beats & hooks!

lol I guess you're not too familiar with Thievery Corp. and K & D, they are certainly not hardcore rave. As a matter of fact, Bebel and Thievery have done several collaborations in the past that have worked out very well. K & D are masters in remixing bossanova and still keep it 'chill'.....only tooo bad that they are lazy fucks... neutral

disbelief Both of those groups are SO mainsteam and boring. But i guess if one wants a regular downtempo track, go with one of those guys.

I've got this on order. Not out in the UK yet. I've got all her other albums, plus both remix albums too. Well worth getting those. She's very talented ... and incredibly beautiful.

your stuff is more ambient. I guess you've never been to a dj-set of K&D, or a concert of Thievery.....boring or mainstream would not be the word that comes to mind. But your right, they don't go too deep, just like Bebel.....

BTW, K&D is not a group, I believe as an ensemble they've only recorded 2 or 3 original tracks....

The music I produce (some) may be more ambient, but the music I dj isn't really. You're right I have never been to see either in a "live" setting. Since I don't care for their music, I have never been that interested. K&D are 2 guys who DJ and do remixes...for the most part.

Babel doesn't go too deep, but she really doesn't have to. Bossa Nova isn't that deep to begin with. It's pretty lite stuff.

Not really. Much of that genre is rooted in stuff from the 70's like Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Raegge/Dub, Pink Floyd etc. The reason we don't play them is because they pander so much to the mainstream. All of the Ultra Chilled or Chill Lounge and to a lesser degreee Buddah Bar is pretty much cookie cutter chill out music comprised of "chill mixes" of regular pop music.

While newer music, like Transit Kings, Amba, Mirror System gets heavy rotation, so does a lot of older music as well as music not deemed "chill out" as chill out can be anything from a track from Yello, to the Doors' Riders on the Storm to Senior Coconut to Sade to Bowie.

Oh please.....all that you mention are these lame compilations that always had their token K&D track or remix on them.....please orgnote me your e-mail address and I'll send you a dj-set by them, I want to know what you think of it since I do have a feeling that you do not know all about K&D.....

why does bossa nova need an edge? part of the appeal of it is how mellow and airy it is. i mean, i appreciate the remix stuff of bebel's, but i always thought it was just to keep a "contemporary" edge to her while her albums lean more to the traditional. which is what i like about her.
