Songs that strike at the heart... for whatever reason Madonna - "Power Of Goodbye"
from Ray Of Light Your heart is not open so I must go The spell has been broken, I loved you so Freedom comes when you learn to let go Creation comes when you learn to say no You were my lesson I had to learn I was your fortress you had to burn Pain is a warning that something's wrong I pray to God that it won't be long Do ya wanna go higher? Chorus: There's nothing left to try There's no place left to hide There's no greater power Than the power of good-bye Your heart is not open so I must go The spell has been broken, I loved you so You were my lesson I had to learn I was your fortress Chorus2: There's nothing left to lose There's no more heart to bruise There's no greater power Than the power of good-bye Learn to say good-bye I yearn to say good-bye I once had a late-night heart-to-heart chat with Madartista on IM and he sent me these lyrics. They totally pertained to the topic we were discussing, and so I copied them and kept them. I took them out recently and now these lyrics seem more poignant to me in 20/20 hindsight. Thank you, Madartista Does anyone else have song that struck you like a ray of light? (no pun intended... OK, a little pun ) VOTE....EARLY

Robin Thicke - "I Need Love"
Settle down, love, for a minute I wanna take you by the hand Hold you I've waited so many nights to see you And I wanna take all my problems out on you I can do better than make love to you Better than make you say my name Please, please, please Oh, don't you make me have to beg I need love, love, love, love, love I need love, love, love, love, love Angel, won't you slow down Seems like you're always back in and back in again And I know that the hardest thing is to please you You would bring most men to their knees I can do better than make love to you Better than make you say my name Please, please, please Oh, don't you make me have to beg I need love, love, love, love, love [Edited 2/22/07 16:17pm] [Edited 2/22/07 17:01pm] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

'Little Star' by Stina Nordenstam
'Darkest Dreaming' by David Sylvian 'Parce Mihi Domine' by The Hilliard Ensemble featuring Jan Garbarek 'Snow of The Sahara' by Anggun 'Right Where It Belongs' by Nine Inch Nails 'Remember When It Rained' by Josh Groban 'Honey & The Moon' by Joseph Arthur ...and pretty much anything by Sigur Ros! These tracks are guaranteed to have me in bits within seconds. I actually couldn't listen to 'Little Star' for years as it was tied in with a really special memory for me, and together, they made a pretty potent mix. The David Sylvian track is full of such longing it breaks your heart to listen to, and the Angunn track is so full of hope it moves me to tears every time I hear it. As for 'Parce Mihi Domine' I think it is one of the most powerful, beautiful and moving things I've ever heard in my 35 years on this mortal coil. But all of the songs listed here mean increadibly personal things to me. But hey - that's the power and beauty of music in that it can move you that much. It's why I love it with such a passion.

Mary Jane - Alanis Morissette
What's the matter Mary Jane, you had a hard day As you place the don't disturb sign on the door You lost your place in line again, what a pity You never seem to want to dance anymore It's a long way down On this roller coaster The last chance streetcar Went off the track And you're on it I hear you're counting sheep again Mary Jane What's the point of trying to dream anymore I hear you're losing weight again Mary Jane Do you ever wonder who you're losing it for Well it's full speed baby In the wrong direction There's a few more bruises If that's the way You insist on heading Please be honest Mary Jane Are you happy Please don't censor your tears You're the sweet crusader And you're on your way You're the last great innocent And that's why I love you So take this moment Mary Jane and be selfish Worry not about the cars that go by All that matters Mary Jane is your freedom Keep warm my dear, keep dry Tell me Tell me What's the matter Mary Jane...

The Other Side - Scissor Sisters
What will one day Become of us We'll grow as grass under their feet No one here will ever know your name And you still lie here next to me If it takes another life I'll wait for you On the other side Everything that comes to me As good Belongs to you I'll count our blessings as I Wait for you On the other side Good luck and I will see you through Get used to this You're going to be alright The world goes on with or without me If I don't ever leave a thing behind I'll still leave you without me If it takes another life I'll wait for you On the other side Everything that comes to me As good Belongs to you I'll count our blessings as I Wait for you On the other side Good luck and I will see you through

Deeper Understading - Kate Bush
As the people here grow colder I turn to my computer And spend my evenings with it Like a friend. I was loading a new programme I had ordered from a magazine: "Are you lonely, are you lost? This voice console is a must." I press Execute. "Hello, I know that you've been feeling tired. I bring you love and deeper understanding. Hello, I know that you're unhappy. I bring you love and deeper understanding." Well I've never felt such pleasure. Nothing else seemed to matter. I neglected my bodily needs. I did not eat, I did not sleep, The intensity increasing, 'Til my family found me and intervened. But I was lonely, I was lost, Without my little black box. I pick up the phone and go, Execute. "Hello, I know that you've been feeling tired. I bring you love and deeper understanding. Hello, I know that you're unhappy. I bring you love and deeper understanding." I turn to my computer like a friend. I need deeper understanding. Give me deeper understanding.

"Show" Let the show begin It's a sorry sight Let it all deceive Now I'm Pains in me that I've never found Let the show begin Let the clouds roll There's a life to be found in this world And now I see it's all but a game That we hope to achieve What we can What we will What we did suddenly But it's all just a show A time for us and the words we'll never know And daylight comes and fades with the tide And I'm here to stay But it's all just a show A time for us and the words we'll never know And daylight comes and fades with the tide I'm here to stay and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

"Ship in a Bottle" When I called you in the morning You were struggling for sense You were journeying through memories so vicious You made all your dying wishes Come true But I know you're gonna try To live without love by and by But that's not living That's just time going by Going by, my love Another ship in the bottle Has got no place to sail To see the waves getting darker every hour The stars have lost their power In the sky But I know you're gonna try To live without love by and by But that's not livin' That's just time going by Going by, my love and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

"Cars And Telephones" I read the pages about me In her autobiography They were brief and to the point A flash, while you are getting dressed A memory that needs to be repressed I'll just wait until it's over Since you've gone away I never know just what to say Since you've gone away I never know just what to say Cause I like cars more than telephones Your voice in my ear makes me feel so alone Tonight I'm gonna drive The silver moon is shining bright Over the interstate God saying hurry don't be late Soon the sun will rise That's when the romance dies And I'm just tired of running around I walked To get the mail today I guess Your letter never came I'll just Check again tomorrow A flash while you are getting dressed A Memory that needs to be repressed I'll just wait without saying a word Since you've gone away I never know just what to say Since you've gone away I never know just what to say Cause I like cars more than telephones Your voice in my head makes me feel so alone Tonight I'm gonna drive The silver moon is shining bright Over the interstate God saying hurry don't be late Soon the sun will rise That's when the romance dies And I'm just tired of running around But fuck it I love you even if I'm gonna feel like shit By the time I get to you Now the sky is turning blue The stars they disappear One by one as the daylights nears And yes you're in my head But that doesn't make you here And I've lost all my friends But you're the one I miss the most And now I'm almost there Yeah I'm almost to the coast And if I had any notion Of how I'm gonna drive my car across the Atlantic Ocean, I'd be fucking set. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Neil Young
"After the Goldrush" Well, I dreamed I saw the knights In armor coming, Saying something about a queen. There were peasants singing and Drummers drumming And the archer split the tree. There was a fanfare blowing To the sun That was floating on the breeze. Look at Mother Nature on the run In the nineteen seventies. Look at Mother Nature on the run In the nineteen seventies. I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high. I was thinking about what a Friend had said I was hoping it was a lie. Thinking about what a Friend had said I was hoping it was a lie. Well, I dreamed I saw the silver Space ships flying In the yellow haze of the sun, There were children crying And colors flying All around the chosen ones. All in a dream, all in a dream The loading had begun. They were flying Mother Nature's Silver seed to a new home in the sun. Flying Mother Nature's Silver seed to a new home. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Joni Mitchell
"The Last Time I saw Richard" The last time I saw richard was detroit in 68, And he told me all romantics meet the same fate someday Cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark cafe You laugh, he said you think youre immune, go look at your eyes Theyre full of moon You like roses and kisses and pretty men to tell you All those pretty lies, pretty lies When you gonna realise theyre only pretty lies Only pretty lies, just pretty lies He put a quarter in the wurlitzer, and he pushed Three buttons and the thing began to whirr And a bar maid came by in fishnet stockings and a bow tie And she said drink up now its gettin on time to close. Richard, you havent really changed, I said Its just that now youre romanticizing some pain thats in your head You got tombs in your eyes, but the songs You punched are dreaming Listen, they sing of love so sweet, love so sweet When you gonna get yourself back on your feet? Oh and love can be so sweet, love so sweet Richard got married to a figure skater And he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percolator And he drinks at home now most nights with the tv on And all the house lights left up bright Im gonna blow this damn candle out I dont want nobody comin over to my table I got nothing to talk to anybody about All good dreamers pass this way some day Hidin behind bottles in dark cafes Dark cafes Only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings And fly away Only a phase, these dark cafe days and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
"Darker with the Day" And so with that, I thought I'd take a final walk The tide of public opinion had started to abate The neighbours, bless them, had turned out to be all talk I could see their frightened faces peering at me through the gate I was looking for an end to this, for some kind of closure Time moved so rapidly, I had no hope of keeping track of it I thought of my friends who had died of exposure And I remembered other ones who had died from the lack of it And in my best shoes I started falling forward down the street I stopped at a church and jostled through the crowd And love followed just behind me, panting at my feet As the steeple tore the stomach from a lonely little cloud Inside I sat, seeking the presence of a God I searched through the pictures in a leather-bound book I found a woolly lamb dozing in an issue of blood And a gilled Jesus shivering on a fisherman's hook Babe It seems so long Since you've been gone away And I Just got to say That it grows darker with the day Back on the street I saw a great big smiling sun It was a Good day and an Evil day and all was bright and new And it seemed to me that most destruction was being done By those who could not choose between the two Amateurs, dilettantes, hacks, cowboys, clones The streets groan with little Caesars, Napoleons and cunts With their building blocks and their tiny plastic phones Counting on their fingers, with crumbs down their fronts I passed by your garden, saw you with your flowers The Magnolias, Camellias and Azaleas so sweet And I stood there invisible in the panicking crowds You looked so beautiful in the rising heat I smell smoke, see little fires bursting on the lawns People carry on regardless, listening to their hands Great cracks appear in the pavement, the earth yawns Bored and disgusted, to do us down Babe It seems so long Since you've been gone And I Just got to say That it grows darker with the day These streets are frozen now. I come and go Full of a longing for something I do not know My father sits slumped in the deepening snow As I search, in and out, above, about, below Babe It seems so long Since you went away And I Just got to say That it grows darker with the day and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Close My Eyes - Mariah Carey
I was wayward child With the weight of the world That I held deep inside Life was a winding road And I learned many things Little ones shouldn't know But I closed my eyes Steadied my feet on the ground Raised my head to the sky And though time's rolled by Still feel like that child As I look at the moon Maybe I grew up A little too soon Funny how one can learn To grow numb to the madness And block it away I l-eft the worst unsaid Let it all dissipate And I try to forget As I closed my eyes Steadied my feet on the ground Raised my head to the sky And though time rolled by Still feel like a child As I look at the moon Maybe I grew up A little too soon Nearing the edge Obvious I almost Fell right over A part of me Will never be quite able To feel stable That woman-child falling inside Was on the verge of fading Thankfully I Woke up in time Guardian angel I Sail away on an ocean With you by my side Orange clouds roll by They burn into your image And you're still alive (You're always alive) As I close my eyes Steady my feet on the ground Raise my head to the sky And though time rolls by Still feel like a child As I look at the moon Maybe I grew up A little too soon

A Woman's Work
By Kate Bush Pray God you can cope. I stand outside this woman's work, This woman's world. Ooh, it's hard on the man, Now his part is over. Now starts the craft of the father. I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left. I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left. I should be crying, but I just can't let it show. I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking Of all the things I should've said, That I never said. All the things we should've done, That we never did. All the things I should've given, But I didn't. Oh, darling, make it go, Make it go away. Give me these moments back. Give them back to me. Give me that little kiss. Give me your hand. (I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left. I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left.) I should be crying, but I just can't let it show. I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking Of all the things we should've said, That were never said. All the things we should've done, That we never did. All the things that you needed from me. All the things that you wanted for me. All the things that I should've given, But I didn't. Oh, darling, make it go away. Just make it go away now.

I'd Really Love To See You Tonight
(England Dan & John Ford Coley) Hello, yeah, it's been a while. Not much, how 'bout you? I'm not sure why I called, I guess I really just wanted to talk to you. And I was thinking maybe later on, We could get together for a while. It's been such a long time, And I really do miss your smile. I'm not talking 'bout moving in, And I don't want to change your life. But there's a warm wind blowing, The stars are out, and I'd really love to see you tonight. We could go walking through a windy park, Or take a drive along the beach. Or stay at home and watch t.v. You see, it really doesn't matter much to me. I'm not talking 'bout moving in, And I don't want to change your life. But there's a warm wind blowing, The stars are out, and I'd really love to see you tonight. I won't ask for promises, So you won't have to lie. We've both played that game before, Say I love you, then say goodbye. I'm not talking 'bout moving in, And I don't want to change your life. But there's a warm wind blowing, The stars are out, and I'd really love to see you tonight.

heard this on a boom box in a Brooklyn subway station in like 80/81; banging
DON'T MAKE ME WAIT TOO LONG (Stevie Wonder/Roberta Flack) I never mind waiting, ooh, ooh, First a glance, then a smile, warmer than all of the heavens; Whispering to me your name, and asking of me the same. First a song, then a dance, that could have lasted forever, But time said we had to part, not caring if it broke our hearts. You said, "Hope we meet again." I said, "Yes, just tell me when." Please don't make me wait too long. Don't make me wait too long. First a note, then a call, with such tender conversation; I knew alright it would be, if you came to visit me First a kiss, then we were gone, to love's magic land together, But morning said you must go, not caring if it hurt us so. I ask you, "Will we again?" You said, "Yes, just tell me when." Please don't make me wait too long. Don't make me wait too long. Don't make me wait too long. First you're here, then you're gone, It's that same old heartbreak story; Thought that you'd be in my life For more than just one night. But you say you got to leave, It destroys me, boy, it hurts me; Tell me what did I do wrong For you to leave me all alone? I don't care how long you'll be, 'Cause I will wait patiently, But please, don't make me wait too long. Don't make me wait too long. Don't make me wait too long.

"Heroes" Lyrics
by David Bowie I, I will be king And you, you will be queen Though nothing will drive them away We can beat them, just for one day We can be Heroes, just for one day And you, you can be mean And I, I'll drink all the time 'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact Yes we're lovers, and that is that Though nothing, will keep us together We could steal time, just for one day We can be Heroes, for ever and ever What d'you say? I, I wish you could swim Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim Though nothing, nothing will keep us together We can beat them, for ever and ever Oh we can be Heroes, just for one day I, I will be king And you, you will be queen Though nothing will drive them away We can be Heroes, just for one day We can be us, just for one day I, I can remember (I remember) Standing, by the wall (by the wall) And the guns shot above our heads (over our heads) And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall) And the shame was on the other side Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever Then we could be Heroes, just for one day We can be Heroes We can be Heroes We can be Heroes Just for one day We can be Heroes We're nothing, and nothing will help us Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay But we could be safer, just for one day Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh, just for one day "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

Lenny Kravitz - Again
Ive been searching for you I heard a cry within my soul I never had a yearning quite like this before Now that you are walking right through my door All of my life Where have you been I wonder if Ill ever see you again And if that day comes I know we could win I wonder if Ill ever see you again A sacred gift of heaven For better worse wherever And I would never let somebody break you down Or take your crown, never All of my life Where have you been I wonder if Ill ever see you again And if that day comes I know we could win I wonder if Ill ever see you again Ive searched through time, Ive always known That you where there, upon your throne A lonely queen, without her king Ive longed for you, my love forever All of my life Where have you been I wonder if Ill ever see you again And if that day comes I know we could win I wonder if Ill ever see you again All of my life Where have you been I wonder if Ill ever see you again And if that day comes I know we could win I wonder if Ill ever see you again All of my life Where have you been I wonder if Ill ever see you again And if that day comes I know we could win I wonder if Ill ever see you again I wonder if Ill ever see you again I wonder if Ill ever see you again I wonder if Ill ever see you again I wonder if Ill ever see you again I wonder if Ill ever see you again I wonder if Ill ever see you again I wonder if Ill ever see you again
