For me - Male - Elvis Presley (tho he was apparently 1/8th Native American )
Female - Dusty Springfield - No contest. Runners up - Tom Jones, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash (both very soulful singers), Annie Lennox and maybe Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris and Dolly Parton. Country got soul too And for fun disco soul - Harry Wayne Casey of KC of the Sunshine Band.

You don't like "Takin' It to the Streets"? "I Keep Forgettin'"? "Minute By Minute"? His two Motown albums are also quite good.

Would Janis Joplin and Dusty Springfield count?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Dusty Springfield is regularly touted as being the greatest blue eyed soul singer and i wouldnt disagree. Her delivery can be absolute perfection sometimes - and Dusty in Memphis goes down as one of the best soul records of all time - not just blue eyed soul.

Maybe it's me, but shouldn't part of this qualification (if we're talking about white artists in the context of soul music) be limited to white artists who had some level of success on the black contemporary music scene? Some of these artists being named have had absolutely no impact on the genre. [Edited 3/4/07 8:45am] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!
