Ok I've listened to the first 4 back to back. Here's how I'd rank them.
1. Madonna -- "Burning Up" is still the best song of the bunch. "Boderline" is funky as shit. "Physical Attraction" and "Everybody" are the shit. 2. Like A Prayer -- Title track is the second best song out of these 4 records. Probably the best songwriting of the four; "Keep it Together" and "Express Yourself" are the best R&B songs that were never on urban radio; "Oh Father" and "Promise to Try" are among her best ballands; Prince's presence is awesome. 3. Like A Virgin -- I love the band on here. The drums, the keys, Nile's production is so damn tight. If "Like A Virgin" weren't so goddamned overplayed, it would be one of her best songs. The hook and lyrics are outstanding. "Dress You Up" is probably the third best song of these records I listened to today; I don't care what anyone says, I love "Shoo Be Doo" and "Stay." 4. True Blue -- Starts out strong enough with great vocals on "Papa Don't Preach" and great bassline on "Open Your Heart." "Live to Tell" is still her best ballad after all these years. I like "Where's the Party" as a guilty pleasure...but this LP as a whole feels undercooked, cheesy, and uneven as hell. The last two songs are probably the 2 worst things she has ever put on tape. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

The only version of LAV that matters is the Confessions tour versions...

AFAIC, it's her strongest artistic statement. Most of her other albums are collections of great singles and good album tracks with some clunkers sprinkled throughout, but ROL is a consistently good album that actually feels like an album to me. It's so far ahead of the pack I'm not even sure what I'd pick as #2. Like a Prayer? Confessions? i would go 1. ROL 2. LAP 3.
