Some Discussions About Journey.

I was reading blackguitaristz post about how he used to rock out on his guitar back in the day and wearing Journey t-shirts, so it gave me the idea to start a forum topic on the group.

I have always liked the group and have enjoyed many of their songs throughout the many years. But why exactly was the group so despised and dismissed by both music fans and rock critics? I mean Steve Perry has one of the best voices in music ever(never noticed how much he sounds like Sam Cooke til recently actually) and Neal Schon is certainly no slouch on the guitar either. Not to mention the great keyboard playing by Jonathan Cain. They were all pretty much first class musicians. So why all of the dislike and lack of respect from so many people towards them?

Who gives a flying F*#K what some critic (professional or armchair or NWF cool ) has to say.
If you dig the music, that's all that really matters.
Remember they were having their biggest hits during the skinny-tie era when any New Wave band were the critic's darlings.

I followed Neal Schon's progress from his early teenage days with Santana.
Journey was very good at what they did (Power Pop/Rock vibe).

My favorite album by Journey is...

...Raised On Radio featuring Randy "Dawg" Jackson on bass.

My Journey mixtape...

Lights
Wheel In The Sky
Lovin' You Is Easy
Any Way You Want It
Walks Like A Lady
Stone In Love
Lay It Down
Still They Ride
Who's Crying Now
Send Her My Love
After The Fall
Happy To Give
I'll Be Alright Without You
Girl Can't Help It

...Please don't ask "Why didn't you include" or "You forgot". Just make your own. thumbs up!

Def Leppard and Toto were other good bands in that genre and era that seemed to generate the same ire from the so called critics and hipsters.

My little brother told me he liked Journey and I was ready to have an intervention. lol

Who else he said he liked... Boston! omg This kid is 17.

I left him alone though. I mean, he likes other stuff that I think is really good: Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin.

Man, Neal Schon was a freakin' prodigy - in addition to Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton was reportedly interested in the teenager joining his band. Dude is one of the most melodic cats out there on geetar. He, Jonathan Cain and Steve Perry seem to have this chemistry - it just works. The females dig it, so f**k the critics.

Schon made a great instrumental album back in '95 called 'Beyond The Thunder'. Very beautiful and haunting music with some very mellow and lovely melodies on them. It also features Jonathan Cain's great keyboard playing. I would suggest picking it up if you are ever able to find it. Just some great chill out music.

I have to re-tell my Def Leppard story. Freshman year in college one of my roomates (there were four of us sharing a dorm room: two African-American art students and two Asian-American engineering students. I think we got stuck together because all four of us didn't smoke. confused ) was really into Def Leppard and played 'Hysteria' night and day. I was NOT a fan and was so sick of that album that I even placed my roommate's cassette behind the glass of his fishtank while he was out one day so it looked like I had drowned it in there, lol. Anyway, after maybe the 500th time hearing it, something clicked and I started to like all the songs. So much so that I bought their 'Vault' compilation a few years back and now I think those 80s tracks are near perfect. headbang

My roomate broke me. lol

That and they took dirty rock and "cleaned" it up a bit, made it more respectable I guess. People give them shit for that too.

P.J., I'm glad that one of my childhood experiences could manifest something positive. I'm a major fan of Journey with Perry on vocals. Steve definately was one ofthe best vocalist in rock. Seriously underrated. As far as Schon; I've stated SEVERAL times on this site that he's one of my all time favorite guitarists and was a huge influence on me as a lead guitarist. Especially in my early teens. Although Ace Frehley of KISS was my first guitar hero, (it was because of Ace that I switched from left to right) Schon at that time, had a much greater impact. I must have made my mother sick talking about how bad Schon was. I spent many a hour in my room, learning Schon's solos and playing them to death. Still to this very day, whenever I'm with my mother and she's riding with me in my car, and "Faithfully" comes on, she says how much it reminds her of when I was a kid and how sometimes she would just stand outside my bedroom door and listen to me play that solo over and over again. Sometimes she would come in and tell me "That sounds good, babe." My mother knew Schon's solo's in and out because she would always hear me in there woodsheding, playing them to death. Playing a certain section of Neal's solo, over and over again. Untill I got that part down pat.

I've seen Journey twice in concert. First was on their "Escape" tour with my girlfriend and her uncle. During that album, Journey was everywhere with "Open Arms" and "Don't Stop Believin'". Then I went again on their "Frontiers" tour. I liked Journey's earlier stuff with Rolie in the band as well. I remember when I was in 5th or 6th grade, my older friends hipped me to the fact that Schon and Rolie used to play with Carlos, who I also dug. And my older cousin told me that Schon played on a project with Larry Graham(!). That was on some Bette Davis tracks. Some fave Journey cuts;

Wheels In The Sky
Lights
Winds of March
Majestic
Anyway You Want It
Don't Stop Believin'
Open Arms
Who's Cryin' Now
Escape
Stone In Love
ALL of the "Frontiers" album

Led Zeppelin is the most "over-played" rock group of all time on the radio, and nobody (people, not critics) despises them for that. So, I think the answer to why certain types of people dog out Journey must lie elsewhere. Personally, I fucking love Journey. Their early shit before Steve Perry as well as the better known later shit. Ainsley Dunbar, Greg Rolie, Steve Perry, Neil Shon...playing their asses off...that is one of the joys of life. I remember watching some old show that used to come on in the mid to late 90s -I think MTV where people would sit around making fun of/critiquing videos and a bunch of losers including Jeanine Garafalo were talking all this shit on one episode about the "Separate Ways" video, about how corny and cheesy and awful both the video and the song (and of course by extension the band) were. They thought they were being so chic and hip and just above it all to bash Journey so casually. So, I would say that the hatred/contempt of the petit-bourgeois intelligentsia for things beloved by the masses - as so perfectly encapsulated by Janine Garafalo's remarks about Journey on that show - is a BIG reason for the Journey hate. Probably the MAIN one.
