John Legend and the Agains

No, it's not a new band, I'm talking about the two songs on John Legend's album Once Again, "Again" and "Another Again", which are kind of different versions of the same song. They are so emotional, so soulful. Especially the slower of the two, "Again". I don't understand how people can hate so much on that man when he has songs like those in his repertoire. Those of you who have heard the songs, what are your opinions?

Again
The first time we ever got a chance to be alone we knew,
That it was wrong to do,
I guess that?s why I was drawn to you,
The 2nd time leads to the 3rd, the 4th, the 7th time,
I feel so alive, it won?t last but it?s alright,
Pleading joy and fading ecstasy, here it goes again oh,
Sneaking fruit from the forbidden tree, Sweet taste of sin,

And I?m doing it again; yes I?m doing it again,
Oh I?m doing it again, I said it would end but here it goes again,

This time you told me you saw me at the same hotel,
You said you knew me well, and I had a familiar smell,
You asked me how am I ever going to put my trust in you,
Like you want me to, cause I know what you?re prone to do,
Accusations fly like bullets do, here it goes again oh,
But you know me because you?re doing it too,

The cycle never ends, never ends,
Yet you?re doing it again,
Oh you?re doing it again,
Yes you?re doing it again,
You said it would end but here it goes again,
And again, and again

Damn I love you, but this is crazy,
I have to fight you almost daily,
We break up so fast,
And we, we make up so passionately,
Why can?t we just trust each ,
You can?t hate me and be my lover,
Passion ends, and pains begins, I come back...

And we?re doing it again,
Yes we?re doing it again,
Oh we?re doing it again,
We said it would end but
Here it goes again,

Each time you call me home in a sweet refrain,
Saying things will change, you?ll take away the pain,
Then we flashback to the first time you put your spell on me,
You envelope me, you feel good as hell to me,
One moment leads to another few,
Here it goes again oh,
Oh leaving you is oh so hard to do,
I just can?t pretend, can?t pretend,
I keep doing it again, yes I?m doing it again,
Oh I?m doing it again,
I said it would end but here it goes again,
Again

"Again" reminds me of an abusive relationship for some reason and "Maxine" "Maxine Interlude" and "Where Did My Baby Go" all seem like one big story...

Yes, I agree. Most of his songs are about cheating and strange difficult relationships. Must be a trip to be with that man... hmmm

So many have said that. And I've tried to understand why but I don't. Both on cd and on stage he is everything but boring to me. Is it his voice, the lyrics, his personality? confuse

Today's soul and r&b needs more people like him (and Ne-Yo)! They know how it should be done.

I am really digging this album. It does flow like a story, which is something rare with albums nowdays. I appreciate that some people can still write actual songs. I adore "Where Did My Baby Go," a tune that could have been written any time within the past 80 years and been a hit. "Maxine" is a Stevie tribute if I ever heard one. John seems to be bringing back the tradtion of the classic Jazz and R&B crooners (paricularly Smokey, on a few songs.) "Show Me" has been on repeat for the past week... music

nod I'm glad there are people here who appreciate his talent. John is as ol' skool as you can get nowadays. It's all about the music, not creating headlines by partying all night long, shaving own head or punching people...

nod To think that I could have danced with him to that song... That's so me. confused
Instead of raising my hand and acting all excited I shake me head and act like I'm not interested so of course he picks the crazy girl in the front row. Better luck next time, I guess... smile

Personally, I think his new cd has more personality and range than his debut album. It does sound mature and it takes a few listens to really absorb it better, but it's easily better than his last one. My favorite cut is Another Again.

nod You absolutely should. I love both ablums, but Get Lifted is more juvenile while Once again is more mature. And mature does not equal boring.
