You should hear his live version of Yesterday.
It may answer your "question" and might even make you believe.

Donny doing...

...Put Your Hand in the Hand

One of the few singers that had skills combined with that rare element of sincerity that made you believe he meant what he was singing.

Donny also produced/played and wrote for this Cold Blood (a horn driven funky band from the Bay area)...

...album featuring the soulful vocals of Lydia Pense.

They do 2 songs he wrote, You Had To Know (which Lydia kills) and Valdez In The Country.

Harlepolis

Depression is what killed Donny,,,same goes with Phyllis Hyman.

Some folks say its a homicide but I fail to understand the motive.

Thanks for that.

Strange, a lot of great musicians take some warming to for me, but I liked the first moment of his music. I could hear it was great instantly.

It's another rare quality (you mentioned the sincerity of his singing) for a great artist to be so easy to listen to & appreciate.

Aw man.. Thank you.. Sysphus lp, Ive been trying to remember the name of this band for a while now. Low and behold it pops up. "mm..mm..mm.."

COLD BLOOD ! Hell i was looking for some Humble Pie A Roadrunner the live version one day and ran across Cold Blood a couple of years ago. They had a live lp also, but just could not remember the name of the band .. but i knew it was a chick singing and there was another rock band out of L.A. they had one lp and it was pretty good but like Cold Blood i can't remember the name.. confused

The only similar group to Cold Blood (horn based R&B) that played around L.A. that I can remember at the moment is Jack Mack & The Heart Attack.

Another similar group I just thought of, although they were from S.F., is The Sons of Champlin.
Bill Champlin (great singer/song writer/B-3 player currently with Chicago) was their lead vocalist.

Btw (Cold Blood trivia), The Pointer Sisters do some background vocals on the Sisyphus album.

I haven't heard that name in 25 years. I think I saw them at Magic Mountain, though I can't say for sure.

Narada Michael Walden has mentioned Cold Blood's Drummer, Sandy McKee a few times in interviews-- in one Modern Drummer interview, he said, "McKee - Oh, man!! - if you wanna check out some inside funk, listen to this guy!"

Sandy McKee had the funk gene for sure. thumbs up!

I played in a band with a horn section during the 70s that covered Down To The Bone, Understanding & Too Many People by Cold Blood.
It was funny because most people had never heard of them so they thought they were original tunes. smile

They were a pretty popular party band down here.
I saw them twice at The Palamino and the place was packed both times.
