a lot of fans are familiar with all his work. I for one have close to 150(at least) CD's, LP's etc. of michael, janet and the jacksons/jackson 5. His work just isn't discussed as much anymore at this point because it was overdone during the ezboard days of KOP, and it's like something people have discussed already. I do hope musical discussions start there again

They are so obnoxious that when Public Enemy did "Fight the Power" and did that line about Elvis, they couldn't believe they were really talking about their beloved Elvis..
yeah, nevermind the fact that the line was 100% inaccurate. "I don't need your forgiveness, cos I've been saved by Jesus, so fuck you."

OK, question for ya'll...
Does anyone recognize the fact that some people - artists, songwriters, producers, music journalists, etc - may be able to state definitively whether an artist is "great" or not? I work for a law firm, and the most important factor when we go to trial is our expert witness. Well, it's the same in music... I think there are "experts" out there who know alot about music, and they ALWAYS put The Beatles at the head of the class. I'm not talking about one person, I'm talking about surveys of these "experts"... Beatles, Stones, Dylan - always Top 3 (or near the top) when you ask about "greatest artists in rock." My question is this: does the combined opinion of the experts that I've described (a panel who may vote for Rolling Stone, or VH1, etc...) have any merit as far as definitively saying OK, this artist is great? And does one have to recognize that opinion, and the prevailing opinion about an artist, without personally being a fan? Can one recognize the Beatles greatness without personally feeling the need to listen to them, cuz it ain't their cup of tea? Because without question, if you put together a dozen music writers, song writers, artists, singers, etc in a room, took a survey on the "Best in Rock", #1 will invariably be The Beatles. There must be some reason and validity to that.

"OMFG! THEY LISTED HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH AS THE SECOND BEST ALTERNATIVE ROCK ALBUM OF ALL TIME! THE BASTARDS!" i guess the opinions that matter most to *me* are the opinions of artists i admire, though i don't take their opinions as gospel. if someone i like is really emphatic in an interview about a certain album they listen to, i might check it out. hearing bowie caw on and on about grandaddy got me into their music, and because of him, i know and love their music. that means more to me than some stupid list in BLENDER. still and all, YES, i do believe that it's possible to personally dislike an act yet still appreciate their impact on music. i've never been a huge stones fan. like i said earlier, i've never liked dylan. i've never really cared a whole lot for elvis. but because of other artists i DO admire who have emulated these acts, i can at least appreciate them in the context of the history of modern/pop music. if i don't like pickles and everyone else does, that has more to do with my taste buds than it has to do with the quality of pickles or the people who eat them.

MADONNA FANS are the most annoying and smug fans. They seem to be in just about every music forum and they refuse to accept that Madonna's only REAL talent is recognising other peoples' and uses them to her advantage (cough) "Ray of light".....
PRINCE fans think that he was responsible for everything that was funky in the 80's JANET fans are never satisfied and blow her achievements out of proportion when comparing her success to other female rivals MICHAEL fanatics have only 5 CDS in their collection and that is "off the wall", "thriller", "bad", "dangerous" "history" and "invincible" which they think are the only CDs they will ever need and hence pretty ignorant to other forms of music. “Beatles” and “Elvis” fans don’t annoy me, probably because a majority of them don’t know how to use the internet.

I agree that a list of 'best artists ever' created by other musicians (and I'm not talking about Joe Shmoe who lives down the block and makes music on his Casio--I'm talking about established musicians) would be held higher by me than any list compiled by journalists. The worst lists are the online ones where fans vote. Those are always totally wrong.

. [Edited 2/28/07 10:27am] I am a Michael Jackson fan myself and i have to agree some are obnoxious and they are all very clicky and group together and it is so hard to get in to those groups (if you want to ) and everyone seems to think they know more than anyone else does and they will argue until they turn blue about stupid things that dont matter at all. The bitchin between the groups is ridiculous as well but there are some fans who arent obnoxious and i dont know whether its just the fans around the london area who are like this but theres definately different levels of fans there are those fans who are normal fans who accept michael and his faults then there are the scary fans who are With Love there is no Death

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but:
1) Nirvana-Yeah,they made good music, but they receive way too much credit for changing rock music in the 1990's. Their fans think they are the alpha & omega of modern rock music. 2) 2pac/Biggie-For some of the reasons mentioned. Rap had existed before and was done better without the wonderful add-ons these two brought to the genre. 3)Prince 1980's fams vs. Prince 1990's fams-Some of the debates on the org are morbidly interesting. You would swear we were talking about two differrent people. "Prince ain't shot without Wendy & Lisa" "I wish Larry Graham would stop destroying P' s music" 4) MJ fans-There are some really cool people on the org that like MJ (Jason Star, Darling Diana (?) who are among the most objective people from the MJ camp. I like reading their posts b/c although they are fans, they try not to apologize for everything MJ does(IMO). With that being said, there is the lunatic fringe on the internet that swear MJ walks on water. If you debate MJ on artistic merits, the sales argument comes up every time.
