Just them 2. So I'd consider them a duo. Kinda like how Tony Toni Tone' was more than the 3 of them but you never saw the other members in the videos nor are they ever really talked about. But they still do their own music, and play instruments???I think, and write their own lyrics, and it doesnt say just Kindred on the albums, it says Kindred and the family soul on them, but their are other R&B bands, just a lot of them are underground, you just dont hear a lot about them... It would have to be marketed to a multi-racial, but not exclusively black audience, because it would eschew hip-hop (not necessarily ignore). Artists like Ben Harper and Robert Randolph are fairly successful with their tours, but are still uncharted phenomenons. A large part of their appeal is they are marketed to jamband, alt-rock and even blues audiences(!). Both have lead vocals with a soulful, spiritual gospellish approach and the bands are racially mixed. Musical fare runs the gamut from rock to ballads to funk-jams. I'd also add the Derek Trucks Band and Victor Wooten's Family Band to that list. (Maybe Lenny Kravitz and John Legend would qualify, but I haven't seen either perform live). bands that are appreciated more by music connoisseurs like you and I. Excuse me, what is a music connoisseurs??My mother calls me this all the time, and I dont know what it means...lol

I have to agree with CosmicTalk on this one -- acts like Kindred and Tony! Tony! Tone! are not bands in the sense of multiple people sharing equal billing and/or a sense of concept ownership. Kindred is a duo with a permanent group of sidemen, just like Tony! Toni! Tone! was a musical trio with permanent sidemen (the same set-up The GAP Band and the latter-day Cameo enjoyed). Look at Kindred's album covers: The ownership of the concept, for lack of a better phrase of words, rests with the husband-and-wife team of Fatin Danzler and Aja Gaynor. Even the link you posted refers to Kindred as a duo. Another example would be Sade, which technically is a band based on the name of its lead singer but in reality it's a singular person (Sade Adu) who has a group of permanent sidemen. Whenever Sade is discussed or seen it's always in the context of Adu solely, not as a band. [Edited 3/5/07 8:08am] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

1.) Kindred is a duo. 2.) While what you're saying is likely true about other soul music bands, it doesn't apply to Kindred. 3.) Sade is technically a band named after the lead singer, but I consider Sade a solo artist with three permanent band members. Not only is the band named after Sade Adu, but every marketing piece (album covers, music videos, interviews with media) features her and rarely are the other three members even present. I don't know of anyone who thinks of Sade in the concept of anything but a solo artist.
