i didn't see any of the other films but i'm glad she won, also! she seems so real. its refreshing to see someone get this acclaim and show excitement. she offers no pretenses, she puts on no blase airs like so many other people in her position do. in these days of super-hip celebs it is a breath of fresh air to see jennifer's attitude.

I'm so with you on that To think we were all watching her this time 3 years ago on American Idol. Amazing, simply amazing. Now I'm excited about her CD coming out later this year, I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I'm very happy for Jennifer Hudson. She's given a lot of hope for other young women who probably thought they didn't have a chance for a singing career much less an Oscar worthy movie role. She's definitely a confidence booster.
I also enjoyed the performances from the actresses nominated for Babel. I thought their raw emotions in their roles were worthy as well . . . .

I felt two emotions when she won - happy and pissed. Happy because Jennifer Hudson deserved to win this award, not only for her amazing performance, but for the long road to get to this level of stardom in the first place.
But I was pissed because the orchestra had the gall to cut off her acceptance speech.

Her speech was horrible. She should have practiced it or read from a paper or something. She won for acting but talked about singing. Bitch, wrong forum!!
I love her though and she out-sang Beyonce!

that's the best part! America exposes itself as a nation full of jokes when a real talent like this can't even make it to the top of a talent competition. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I'm happy for her but does anyone think maybe she peeked too early. Her first movie is a big hit and that's great and so are the critical applause, but (and I hate to say this) what does everyone think of her future in movies? What else will she do? I guess I have to see the movie to apperciate her because she strikes me as one note...and that note is kind of boring.

Yes I saw that, but for some reason it looked like they were competing for who could sing the loudest...even Noni Rose came in and did her scream just a little bit louder...for a minute it seemed ike they were all having a true to life dreamgirls moment like "I'll show you who is the best diva moment". I kind of felt there was just a tidbit of tension between them but they put on fake smiles out of respect. I don't know if any of you saw the five heartbeats when the 2 singers were performing on stage and trying to compete, to steal the "lead singer's" moment between them, so they both hollered just a little bit louder than one another other to impress the audience...hilarious. I hated it. She was overpowering all of them on purpose and taking over the stage with her really uncontrolled vocals. I thought she was great on the solo bit, and Beyonce was better, but at the end when they all came together I thought it was selfish and unprofessional.

Congrats to Jen for the win though. Eddie was VILE. He did a diva strop and left the auditorium. ALL the other acting nominees were very graceful and please for the winners, but Eddie showed what he was really made of. What the hell is wrong with losing to a veteran character actor who was nominated for Oscars before you were even born?

She wasnt overpowering and her voice is very controlled! She was singing effotlessly! If anyone was singing all over the place it was Beyonce with all the hair swinging antics and grunting while she sang! Come on, Jenni handled her performance very well and Beyonce was struggling to keep up so she went all out. &

There's effortless control and there's screaming on purpose to get attention. Jennifer Holliday's performance was even worse on the roof outside before the show.

False Idols, or Why Democracy Sucks As predicted, American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson nabbed the Best Supporting Actress Oscar Sunday night for her powerhouse role in Dreamgirls. The achievement comes on the heels of her Golden Globe win, not to mention the unheralded distinction of becoming the only black female musician ever to grace the cover of Vogue. Hudson’s true underdog backstory evokes that oft-immitated mix of streetwise grit, unequivocal talent and wide-eyed humilty. In essence, she embodies an American idol and the American Dream at once. And now more than ever, her unfettered success seems to prove that the expert panel of American Idol judges couldn’t spot true talent if it bit them in the sass-talking ass. Certainly the folks at Idol would have us believe that they were behind her from day one. The collective memory is short and forgiving, and as long as Simon agrees to eat crow (pre-recording a saccharine good luck message for Hudson to mitigate his previous critiques), we’re all willing to believe that Jennifer Hudson was actually an American Idol winner. Except that she wasn’t. Nor was Robyn Troup, the young woman who appeared alongside Justin Timberlake at the Grammy awards but didn’t even make it into this year’s AI Top 24. And for all her success, some would argue that the AI stamp has been an obstacle rather than a boon to Kelly Clarkson, who has, in spite of her association with the brand, gone on to become a credible pop artist in her own right. Still, for good or bad, it’s because of AI that the world knows who Jennifer Hudson is. Anyone doubting her true talent need only recall how she dominated Sunday’s performance of the Dreamgirls medley “Listen,” “Love You I Do,” and “Patience” (all of which were nominated for Best Original Song). It was obvious to everyone watching that alongside Hudson, Beyonce seemed hell-bent on out-Diva-ing herself, both to show Hudson up and thumb her nose at the academy that snubbed her. Hudson’s got Ms. R&B Universe on the run, and that in itself is no small feat. So what does it all mean? The fact that American Idol consistently undermines its own attempt to prove itself as a legit star factory is nothing new. But there’s only so much we can blame on the show’s judges and producers. Because at the end of the day, isn’t American Idol the great musical equalizer? Isn’t it the American public that ultimately decides who wins and loses (assuming the American public can text message fast enough to cast its vote)? Maybe the reality show is a reflection of reality. Perhaps the truth is that we don’t really know what’s good — or what’s good for us. Take a peek at who’s been camping out in the White House for the last seven years and you’ll see what we mean. -- Lauren Gitlin
