That was intersting to see all of Donna's ballads just typed out and to see that they all underperformed (even to an extent "Woman In Me", which was a hit but not a big one and is consistently ignored on US hits collections). "The Power Of One" only made some impact because it scored as a dance remix (and the remixes sounded pretty good but weren't all that innovative)

Of all the ballads she released as a single,my favorite is "The Woman In Me".I was shocked that it didn't become a huge hit.It has a really good, sexy video too.

Knowing Donna,it probably is lol

Very preachy....most of that album was except for some standout tracks like "I'm Free". Should've been a single.

speaking of "I'm Free"....be sure to watch 'The Best of Soul Train' this weekend if you can. They're gonna show an episode from December 1984.Donna appears on it and performs two songs "Supernatural Love" and "I'm Free".

I like it. It gets stuck in my head quite a bit. I hope she gets a proper boxed set one day and it includes this track and other rarities, including her few non album b-sides, which I think were from the Geffen era..."Tearin' Down the Wall", "Sometimes Like Butterflies"...there was another one....but what was it? I want to say "Face The Music" unless that was by an artist that sounded like Donna.

No,"Face The Music" is by Donna lol It was the B-side of her 1984 single "Supernatural Love".

I haven't seen "SOul Train" in a long time. I mean, I don't remeber like seeing it while flipping through the channels on a Saturday morning...maybe because I'm just not watchign TV at the time. Soul Train has got to still be on. I'll look for it. Thanks!

Holy crap...thanks for saying that because it's on right now...and so it Donna doing "Supernatural Love". I would assume that she does "I'm Free" later. Damn..."Cats Without Claws" isn't necssarily about hookers...she says it's about helpless people! She seems very shy, like she's a teenager. She is buried under that hair. I wish I would've seen the whole episode to hear all the eighties tunes. So is this the first episode of this sort of series? Does this mean the proper show is off the air or is this a subsistute instead of playing clips from eariler in the year? This seems like an odd episode to chose.

Any chance Donna was singing live? I don't know that I've ever heard a proper live performance on Soul Train. Thanks again. I just wish I would've read this post sooner!

I don't know if 'Soul Train' is off the air,but lately, they've only been showing re-runs,which is fine with me lol For several weeks now, they've been showing episodes from the 70s and 80s.Donna was not singing live.In the 70s,it was common for artists to sing live, but in the 80s and beyond, everyone lip-synched.

btw,go to YouTube and see Donna's 1975 performance on Soul Train. She sang "Love To Love You Baby".

I hope the reason for them showing old episodes is that the show is cancelled. I really dread the day when I turn my TV on to record an old episode and see the "Shit Hop Train" has returned.

By the way, I'm glad they changed the ending of the old episodes and took that damn "American Idol" off the side of the screen. For an hour, at least, we were taken back to when music was actually good, only to have some bullshit to be the first thing we see afterwards. That "American Idol" picture on the side was like a depressing reminder saying....."Hello, don't have too much fun, remember we're still here and we're going to continue making bullshit music from now on". lol

lol I'm telling ya! I've been enjoying the hell out of the whole episodes and when they air, I get totally into them. I hate to see the hour end.

I see a whole hour full of ass shaking and ass shaking music....then I see that damn picture on the side of the screen afterwards advertising a bunch of boring asses. I say to myself....."Look at these damn motherfuckers!". I reach for the button to stop my recording real quick. I'm a perfectionist and when I record, I cut out commercials and like to have a recording that comes as close to a professional copy as possible. Turning the recording off before the ending credits stops it from being perfect but I'm not going to look at that damn advertisement on my recording. lol

Last year,I was flipping channels and came across a "new" episode of Soul Train. It featured the Pussycat Dolls.I actually became depressed watching this episode, seeing what the show (and today's R&B music) had become disbelief

Let's hope that Don Cornelius has finally decided to put this show out of it's misery. From now on,he should just show re-runs from the 70s and 80s.

It's a cool album unlike just about everything she did after. It was very much what was happening at the time, I guess. It would've been nice if it would've included "Virgin Mary" (which sounds just like these songs). I have no idea why that wasn't included...was it before this or after? I think it's only on one of her "Greatest Hits" albums (I have it...it's from 1977 and goes as far as the "I Remember Yesterday" album).

The song "Virgin Mary" isn't included on the album because it was recorded in 1975,months after the 'Lady Of The Night' album was released. However,it should have been included on the CD reissue as a bonus track.Like you say,it is similiar to the other songs.I have "Virgin Mary" on that 1977 Greatest Hits album you mentioned.I don't think it's such an outstanding song.

I still need that shit.

It's amazing how many singles she released outside of America before "Love To Love You Baby" came out! In 1974,she released a single called "Something's In The Wind".The lyrics to this song were later re-worked and became "Back In Love Again" on the 1977 'I Remember Yesterday' album. Most of these early singles went nowhere but as a fan,it's fun to collect them.

did you guys ever hear about the rumored 'Love Machine' album? The story goes that this album was recorded in late 1975 and was supposed to be the follow-up to the 'Love To Love You Baby' album.Problem is,Casblanca felt that it was too cold, robotic and electronic so they cancelled the album and made her record a new one ('A Love Trilogy') that was more commercial and accessible.

hmmm

DONNA SUMMER 'LOVE MACHINE'

In Love With Love
Make Me A Woman (Take Me)
First Hand Experience In Second Hand Love
Love Machine
Now I Need You
In Love With Love (reprise)

Most fans say this story is a hoax, but if it really does exist,I won't rest 'til I find it! lol

When I would flip through the channels, if I knew it was on at the time, I would speed past the channel because I didn't even want to see or hear the smallest glimpse of it. I do the same thing with BET also because it's very depressing what they have become. Also, hearing just the smallest snip of shit hop depresses the living hell out of me.

Let's hope that Don Cornelius has finally decided to put this show out of it's misery. From now on,he should just show re-runs from the 70s and 80s.

I was getting bored with it and watched very little of it in the late 1980s. When the 1990s came around, I completely stopped watching it altogether. "Soul Train" should have gone off the air around the same time that "American Bandstand" did in the late 1980s.

I hope they continue playing the old episodes from now on and if they ever decide to stop, they need to just take the show off the air completely because the new episodes are not only boring as hell, but they are a fucking disgrace to the name "Soul Train".

They could all possibly be rewrites, but "Now I Need You" is on "Once Upon A Time" and "Take Me" (which includes the lyrics "make me a woman..." is on "I Remember Yesterday".

Amazingly, most of these songs actually exist. They appear on other projects that Giorgio Moroder was involved in:

***"In Love With Love" appears on the 1978 album 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' by Munich Machine produced by Giorgio Moroder.

***"Make Me A Woman (Take Me") appears on Donna's 1977 album 'I Remember Yesterday' where it is simply titled "Take Me".

***"First Hand Experience In Second Hand Love" appears on Giorgio Moroder's 1978 album 'From Here To Eternity'

***"Now I Need You" appears on Donna's 1977 album 'Once Upon A Time'

hmmm makes you wonder if this album was really recorded

I'm familar with the Donna tracks (of course) but not the Giogio ones. Are they any good? Recorded by Donna or another female singer?
