Rolling Stone magazine is shit

I buy most music magazines, but I hardly ever buy this. Full of adverts and boring political stuff (a hangover from the sixties when hairy rock musicians were gonna start the revolution, maaan)

that magazine should be ashamed of how crap they have become. they barely even have anything music related in it any more. i hate when non musicians are on the cover.

yes particularly when it's Tom Cruise or other actor, yech!

To me, they still conduct the occasaional good interview (who said that about airports? I buy one almost every time I fly!), but they're like the old Santa looking hippies here on Telegraph Avenue, holding onto something long gone, and at the same time grasping at the worst of the new.

While we're on the subject, what is the best music magazine?

So true this magazine has sucked now for about 15 years or so. There use of the cover as if they are Maxim or in some cases Playboy is the biggest issue. I have no problem seeing Jessica Simpson or Christina Aguilera looking hot, but thats what Maxim is for. And now dont they have a Rolling Stone reality show? Just what i want, some 19 year old college loser writing about artists that i like and he has no clue about.

i used to swear by the british music magazines - Q, uncut and mojo - but these days, i think even the brit rags have gotten lamer. still better than american music magazines, though. sigh

I like Blender. They aren't trying to fool anybody.

I will say I read some really funny writing in RS, even now.

I like Q & Mojo okay. At least they're basically devoted to music, unlike RS. I don't read these mags as much as I used to, though. Pretty much only if a cover catches my eye (and not just because a hot girl is on it!)

I haven't realy checked out Blender. I thought that was like FHM?

The only thing I liked from them recently was the 500 greatest albums of all time issue about four years ago. Other than that the top 100 greatest guitar players magazine was ok, but a few of the new guitarist ranked too high.

I think RS is a'ight. The political articles are more interesting to me, but I dont place much stock in their music coverage. Blender is a cool mag.Like Sextonseven said, its straight music, no pretense of anything else. I used to buy import mags, but now they're like $10.00 an issue, and thats not happening in my world anytime soon(unless they package it w/a kick-ass free sample cd)

same here...unless it's a full tribute issue dedicated to someone i like (i.e., the bowie specials that seem to come out every other year) or unless it has a cool bonus CD comp, i can't justify 10 bucks for a magazine.

...alTHOUGH, i DID pay ten bucks just to read the kate bush interview in mojo a couple years back... redface

Blender is published by Maxim so just think of Maxim's music section expanded to an entire issue. They're juvenile and they know it.

The political stuff is the only thing left worth reading in RS. I'm a fan of the writing style of the magazine, but that doesn't mean much when it's the 18th zillionth article on the Olsen Twins. shrug I only buy it rarely now. Most music mags I pick out based on whether or not the cover caught my eye.

i never liked the british ones at all. all they do is rave about a band that hasn't even put an album out yet like they're the Second Coming of the Beatles or whoever, only to start tearing them down as yesterday's news 3 weeks after their album comes out. or the rest of the world realizes they weren't that fantastic in the first 5 minutes, and the mags never mention them again.

So, what's the reason for the magazines decline? Change of ownership, creative director, etc, or just a sign o' the times about the entertainment industry in general?

i think it's all gotten so corporate and incestuous that magazines have essentially become marketing tools for big multimedia titans. to be honest, these days i get most of my information from blogs and from websites like pitchfork.com...if i want to know if a new album is any good or not, i check out the reviews on rateyourmusic.com, where just plain folks review stuff.

While we're on this dissing vibe, anyone else think Greil Marcus is shit as well? And that bloke who's Gary Gilmore's brother. I like the music of these as much as anyone, but the grimer wormtongue style journalism makes me vom

Like commercial radio, mainstream music magazines mostly suck in America. That said, I read them all and I have to say RS still has the lame competition beat. I think on the whole RS tops Spin, Blender, Vibe, The Source, etc. I thought Blender started off promising and then fell off. The British magazines, such as Q and Mojo, are generally better. Because those U.S. magazines are so weak, I supplement my reading with many of the musician magazines, like Guitar World, Guitar Player, Bass Player, etc. and genre-specific publications like Relix, Hittin' the Note, Downbeat, Blues Revue, etc. By the way, by profession I am a magazine editor and have long wanted to launch my own music magazine to stand head and shoulders over the rest (as a former DJ have also long wanted to launch a superior radio station).

I used to like Blender. Nowadays I really don't read any music magazines. "Mix" or "Electronic Musician" every now and them to find out what the latest gear is, but that is all.

let me just be honest: i never understand a damn word greil marcus writes. lol

robert christgau is another critic i dislike. i don't understand his rating system. he'll trash an album then give it a B+. huh?!

the only music writers i really enjoy these days are nick hornby and chuck klosterman (and even HE annoys me half the time). and i love when musicians write about music - i was in heaven when anne magnuson and kim gordon used to write for Spin, and stephin merritt was a very fun read when he was music critic for time out new york.
