You know, when Prince played the Foo Fighters song, nobody made a fuss about some black guy playing music in a predominantly white genre.

Jesus, when will folks just accept the talent for what it is?

I agree. The man is authentically talented. I'm all over the Robin Thicke cd I don't care if he's black white or Barney purple. And as a black woman who grew up with the tradition of falsetto soul singing, I will readily admit that Robin's falsetto makes me want to drop my underpants and start neckin' today as quickly as some of the old scholers did back in the days when I was too young to be thinking such thoughts:lol:

I don't think anyone can deny that white artists have been very successful by playing or co-opting musical styles invented by black artists.

But, in some cases, white artists "playing black music" need the support/ endorsement of the black audience to thrive. Thicke is just the most recent example of an artist who parlayed his following among black audiences to greater success on the pop charts.

In any event, Thicke has been produced and (I believe) managed by black folk. Eminem was produced by Dre. JT, by Pharrell and Timbaland. At least, in recent times, black folk have made something in the process.

"Lost Without You" is the best thing on the radio right now, period. It's also the best R&B song out right now,IMO.Let's not trip on the fact that Robin is white.Good music should be applauded and celebrated. There are plenty of Black artists who are doing really well right now, too.

I'm glad to see all the love for Thicke, but I can't get down with the Justin bashing. BTW, "My Love" just missed out by peaking at #2, I think.

I like what I've heard of Jamie quite a bit.

I think I'm going to check out Robin at Irving Plaza. The tickets are actually available and like two hundred dollars cheaper than The Police.

A good friend of mine called me last night and was bragging about his album. He said there is some synthesizer Princey type songs on it. The first thing I asked was if it has drum machines or real drums....and if it has drum machines, are they strong sounding drum machines or weak shit hop sounding ones because weak drum machines and bass absolutely ruin a song. He said he really didn't pay attention but he would make me a copy to see what I thought.

Does this album sound like anything I would like?

I do agree with you...but I really do think Mr. Thicke is a true blue eyed soul artist, and not trying to fake it...unlike some other people (timberfake). I think that is really who he is...hopefully he'll stay humble and grounded...

From his description, I couldn't see why he would think I would like something like that. He told me he heard some Prince like synths so I guess that's the reason. However, without some strong drums and bass behind those synths, even Prince himself would sound like shit. I guess I'll find out if I like it or not when I receive the copy from him.

unless T.I. is white, I don't think hip-hop has anything to worry about. Eminem is talented, but he peaked a few years ago.

Eminem is a great rapper, but he's not #1. Not even top 5 (in terms of skills or sales) when you count Andre 3000, Big Boi, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and the Game.

As for #1 R & B- yeah , Thicke's #1 right now until the next Beyonce' single drops.

You're better off making a "#1 R&B- White Boy" case for Justin Timberlake.

Again, I say.

Robin Thicke found success playing black music and/or using a sound finding its roots in black music. That doesn't mean I don't like his music or buy his records. Ditto for Dave Brubeck. Bill Evans. The Beatles. The Stones. Steely Dan. The Doobie Brothers. The Police. Jamiroquai. 3rd Bass. et cetera.

I don't see the contradiction. You may not like the way he SAID it. But I don't see the contradiction.

robin thicke is one of those artists that i actually forget that he is a white guy. i just love his music. i don't get how people try to say that well "the white guys are taking from the brothers yet again", i mean why can't artists be artists and music be music? naw i'm not exactly pumpin' Chris Brown, or Pretty Ricky out my car, because I can't stand their music, but i love Robin's because i feel like it's for the "mature adult" and not the always targeted sex crazed "teeny boppers".
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
