FALCO - the 50th birtday tribute thread today Feb 19th 2007, Johann Hoelzel a.k.a. Falco would have celebrated his 50th birthday. so as an Austrian it's time for me to show some patriotism with a tribute thread though I'm probably not his biggest fan in the universe, I do appreciate his musical output and his contribution for the Austrian and international Pop Music. his debut album in 1982 was the first and only one from him that I bought. the follow up Junge Römer had quite some cool tracks, very cool, no denying that... then came Falco 3 and Amadeus... well that was okay, I mean nice and all, but let's say I tried to avoid all the major hoooplllahh around it in the upcoming years his output was a hit and miss for me, some crap and some good shit, still always enough interesting stuff for me to keep an eye on him from the distance. well, until I married a Canadian who is the biggest Falco fan out there and introduced his full discography into our household so today it's time to give it up for Falco. Happy Birthday Hansi! here's a few links to my personal faves Junge Roemer http://www.youtube.com/wa...FXrobgorbs http://www.youtube.com/wa...l0bXnWV5Vs Ganz Wien (1981) his first single, the video to it was compiled later out of old snippets http://www.youtube.com/wa...P0_DCK-2zA Der Kommissar (Live) http://www.youtube.com/wa...h290yFWo9M The Sound Of Musik a weird patchwork... but still cool with me http://www.youtube.com/wa...HK1erAT5AQ Official Website http://www.falco.at/ Johann (Hans) Hölzel (February 19, 1957 – February 6, 1998), better known by his stage name Falco, was a classical music prodigy turned Austrian hip hop-pop and rock star. Born in Vienna, as the only survivor of a triplets birth, he studied at the Vienna Music Conservatory. In 1977 he lived for a short time in Berlin (Germany). When he returned to Vienna he was playing in the Austrian bands Spinning Wheel and Hallucination Company. Before becoming an international rock star, he was bass player in the Austrian hard rock band Drahdiwaberl (from 1978 until 1983). With Drahdiwaberl he performed the song Ganz Wien, which was later a track on his first own solo album Einzelhaft. As a solo artist (from 1980 on), Falco had taken an interest in the sounds and rhythms of rap music, and was one of the first Europeans to incorporate rap stylings into pop and rock music. He is best known internationally for the rap-styled "Rock Me Amadeus" (inspired in part by the Oscar-winning film Amadeus) from his album Falco 3, which became a worldwide hit in 1986 and reached #1 on the US charts (arguably the first "rap" song to achieve this feat, notwithstanding Blondie's success with their 1981 hit "Rapture"). Falco's first hit was "Der Kommissar" (a partial rap song about drug consumption) from the 1982 album Einzelhaft. An English cover version of "Der Kommissar" by After the Fire became a Top 5 hit in the United States in 1983. Incidentally, the video for the song would later be dubbed by MTV as "The Worst Video of All Time". That same year, Laura Branigan recorded a version of the song with new English lyrics, under the title "Deep In The Dark," on her album Branigan 2. 16 years later, a new version "Der Kommissar 2000" and two new remixes of the original put the song back on the charts. Other well-known international hits were "Vienna Calling" and "Jeanny" from the album Falco 3. "Jeanny" was somewhat controversial when it was released in Germany and the Netherlands, because it was told from the point of view of a rapist and possible murderer. Several DJs and radio stations refused to play the song, although it became a huge hit in many European countries, and inspired two sequels on later albums. In 1986, the album Emotional was released, produced by Rob and Ferdi Bolland (Bolland & Bolland). On the Album were "Jeanny Part 2- Coming Home", "The Sound of Music" and a song about Kathleen Turner and Robert Capa. In 1987, he sang a duet with Brigitte Nielsen "Body next to Body". The Album Wiener Blut was released in 1988 but it did not get much publicity outside Germany and Austria. In 1990, he made a song for Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz. The song was titled "Tanja P. not Cindy C.", and appeared on the Album Data de Groove. After "Jeanny", there were a number of European hits, but Falco was rarely heard in the US and the UK. His 1992 US comeback attempt, with the song "Titanic," won a number of awards, but failed to chart in America. Falco died of severe injuries received following his collision with a bus in his Mitsubishi Pajero near the resort of Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic on February 6, 1998 at age 39. At the time of his death, he was working on a comeback into the music world. He was buried in the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery) in Vienna, Austria. http://en.wikipedia.org/w...(musician) [Edited 2/19/07 4:01am] Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. Cool that you mentioned him!
His first two albums are great, especially Junge Roemer is a very, very smooth record, considering the year it was done (1984). It does sound good even today. The title track is maybe my favourite Falco Track of all time - everything about it is perfect. I bought the double album "Hoch Wie Nie" some days ago and I am very happy with it, since it covers tracks like "Wiener Blut", that is a classic, too, but hidden on a mediocre album that I possibly will not buy. For me the stuff to have is: - Einzelhaft - Junge Roemer - (mabye) Falco 3, though I really do not like the sound much. - Falco Live Forever - a live concert in Germany in 1986. and Hoch Wie Nie, a retrospective, to have the rest There is a very good DVD out there about his legendary concert on the Donauinsel Festival in 1993. Great DVD (with a 2nd concert from 1985 or so). I also do have a DVD with his regualar videos, which sadly misses the original "DEr Kommissar". Shame

Great thread! I am a HUGE Falco fan. I have every one of his CD's. Definitely one of the most underrated pop artists of the 80's and 90's.
I play Falco on my net radio station quite a bit... lately i've been playing the English version of "Jeanny". Great song!

Falco was alright...I was never a diehard or anything but I liked his sense of humor. Well it was not exactly the bus's fault as he was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He was standing on a parking lot (if I remember correctly) and suddenly drove into a big street. It is still not sure if he comitted suicide, some people close to him think he did . Anyway, right, ja - Falco. The guy had a great sense of humour. His songs were brimming with it. He invented Austro-rap. A little known, forgotten genre. Er wahr so exaltiert/er war so popular ... und er hatte flair. My favourite song of his is the wonderful, hilarious and totally bonkers, The Sound of Music. RIP! The guy actually jumped on the rap bandwagon when it was only three or four coaches long (in the early eighties, with Der Kommisar). Highly underrated, I think, despite his campy, one hit wonder status in the UK and US. Plus he could actually sing too. And thewn there was the irreverent sense of humour. I actually played my copies of Falco 3 and Emotional last night in honour of your countryman - and your good self, Mr D. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. No, senor. I'm English. Though I spent a very happy 18 months in West Berlin in the mid-eighties. But my wife's American, so maybe some of her Brooklynese has rubbed off on me. Anyway, although I couldn't stand most of the German music I heard at the time (we are talking Modern Talking, CC Catch, Nena and the fucking Scorpions), Falco has a real highlight - oh, and so were Einstuerzende Neubauten, Can, Faust and Neu, but I was already into them when I got off the plane at Berlin airport. I like Portugal. Wonderful country, great people. [Edited 2/20/07 12:11pm] There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying.
