SoulAlive

So what's the schedule for upcoming "Best of Soul Train" episodes?

I'm getting ready to watch this week's episode. It's from December 1984 and features Donna Summer and The Staple Singers. They need to go back to the 70s! Anybody know what we will see in upcoming weeks?

As I said in another post when you said it was on WGN, I figured I would flip to it and I was lucky because she was in the middle of "Supernatural Love". I caught her doing "I'm Free" and there was no way she was singing...she was trying to sing along to the robotic part...come on! Interesting song choice. Was it meant to be a single or did most artists do the current single and an album cut? Would've made sense to do the slightly older hit "She Works Hard..." (would've pissed off Geffen) or the prior single "There Goes My Baby" for a slower dance. Or "Eyes" which was a single later! I don't know.

Turns out, unless I'm looking in the wrong place, Detroit does not air "Soul Train". Now I do live in Ann arbor, but of course we get Detroit's stations. Now I'm not sure if poeple are aware, but Detroit has a pretty large African American population (I'm trying to be funny...sorry). What does that say about all the stations here...or maybe what does it say about "Soul Train" since there is no response or not enough of one from fans. I asked in another post, but is the proper show over and now they are just airing these old and very entertaining episodes.

I was actually born in Detroit lol This explains my love for Motown and Madonna, lol

It was common for artists on Soul Train to perform their current single, then come back later in the show to sing another song from their album. In the winter of 1984 when this episode originally aired,Donna's current single was "Supernatural Love".I always assumed that "I'm Free" would become a single, but alas,it never did.Donna was pissed with Geffen Records at this point. She felt that she wasn't being promoted effectively.

Before that, she was Justine (Theo's girlfriend) on The Cosby Show. And she was always fine! nod

They started showing the old episodes in December. I missed the the first show which was Barry White, and the second one which was War, because I was trying to locate the channel that "Soul Train" was on these days....since I had abandoned the show years ago. lol I caught the third show, which was The Time and have been watching it ever since.

Here's a list of the episodes. The dates are wrong on the site but the order of the shows is correct.....

You remember seeing Vanity 6 lately because there was a youtube thread of that performance here. I think it was you that started the thread. biggrin

"Soul Train" does air in Detroit. They just keep switching the time for some reason. If it doesn't air on channel 20 at 4:00PM on Saturday, it airs 12 hours later at 4:00AM. It's pretty ridiculous. Most Saturdays it airs at 4:00PM followed by "Showtime at the Apollo."

That's pretty crazy but thanks for the heads up. If I miss it on WGN can watch it later. These Best Of episodes sound great!

I forgot about this but did catch the Donna Summers ep. Before that there was something on called Freedom Music (or at least that's what my info. said) and caught the middle of a performance from Prince from 1999. I missed the beginning & have no idea what that was but it brought me back. smile

That was the 1999 New Year's Eve concert "Rave Un2 The Year 2000". They edited it down to only one hour. I was watching WGN when it first came on and I knew that it was only one hour until "Soul Train". When I saw "Rave" coming on, I got pissed because I thought they were going to show the full concert and not air "Soul Train".....I already have "Rave" on DVD. lol

I also thought of Handclaps staying up till 4 a.m. to see "Soul Train", only to find a damn home repair show on. lol
