Actually there is a Tori whore at one of the bars I frequent and I always pick his brain and I asked him about understanding her lyrics and he said to look at it like the pieces of a puzzle or parts of a painting all intertwined and connected and the more of the puzzle you put together the more sense it makes. I love that concept. Well now this has sealed the deal for me. The fact that she can go from the Beekeeper, which sorry folks just isn't that inspired, TO THIS tells me she aint dead and just experienced some kind of resurrection. Today is the first day without my ex in the same city or even the same state as me. I'm resurrecting and experiencing another personal revolution and I can only think of a handful of artists that I'd want as the soundtrack to my new life and she's become one of them You're really struggling with her lyrics, huh? I am part of it is that I can't understand what she's saying sometimes and that becomes a distraction as I have to listen to the music first and then the lyrics which is opposite of the way I approach music. I'm always lyrics first, music second. If I had stuck on the Tori Train and never gotten off, I would have made her music a part of my life the way that I made Desire or the way I will and have made other music. I think my maturity and coming out the other side of my dysfunction, and really trying to stay there, will serve me very well in having this woman become something to me she has never been. I have yet to really write out and explain my own history with the church and that is something I am setting out to do this year, thank you for kickstarting this for me , and this image speaks NOVELS to me. I really didn't know she had a history in the church and that is just another bridge that I need to close the divide between Tori and I . Have you checked out Toriphoria for the lyrics yet? That feels like cheating to me but eventually I had to do that with Siamese dream so..... I like to discover and explore lyrics unaided. makes it more meaningful then. The thing about the distraction I spoke of earlier, it can be somewhat damaging because I've heard her compared to that Damn Kate Bush so much that when I can't understand what she's singing I hear the accusation of "gimmick!" swimming in my head and if I make that connection, forget about it. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Except her subject matter is probably the least Kate Bush-like thing about her.

You haven't had a breakthrough with her yet, have you? See, it took me years to finally listen to her. I was afraid that all of the comparisons and accusations of copying would be true. And I didn't want to think that about one of my heroes. So I went forever without seeking out Kate's music. And once I did, I secretly wanted to hate it. The first thing I bought was "Hounds of Love" and I was in love within the first few days. To my relief, I found them to be extremely different. Tori's got her thing and Kate's got hers. But I can see a connection. Their voices have a similar range. Kate's is quirkier and more affected. Tori's is sexier and more passionate. Their music is nothing alike. Neither are their lyrics. Kate's songs are generally a narrative of sorts. Tori's are more stream-of-consciousness and confessional. I realize that there's a value placed on getting to an idea or a sound first. That's why The Beatles are considered better than The Stones. But nobody plays the piano like Tori. Nobody tackles the subjects she does with as much conviction. She lives and breathes her art in a way that Kate never has and never will. There is a detachment to what Kate does that makes her more of storyteller and less of a teacher. I love and respect Kate for what she does, but she doesn't make me feel one ounce of what Tori can. They're about as similar as Prince and Michael Jackson. That comparison is totally misguided and played out too. The similarities are there. But not as much as some people would like to believe. Mostly, it's lazy journalism and arm chair criticism. Wholly misinformed.

The aspect of Tori's work that seems most informed by what Kate does is the point that Cloudbuster has pointed out.
They have a similar way of layering background vocals. But Kate seems like one of those singer-songwriters that EVERY female musician sites as an inspiration. She's one of those rites of passage like Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks. Tori, Bjork and PJ have become that to a new generation and entirely on their own merits.

I have not broken the Proverbial Kate dentaldam I have always rejected the comparisons and the calls to reject Tori because ...Kate did it first. Whatever I am drawn to Tori because of her story and who she is. I know there is a vast wealth waiting to be found and I will find it. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

you know, she's already at it with the double entendres. american doll posse could be calling out a few things:
1) the men who enforce the status quo to keep american women in their "place," (hence the american doll posse) or 2) it could be referencing the new young female hollywood and the way they group themselves together and behave in similar ways (hence the american doll posse), or 3) young girls who will inherit the future (good or bad) of this nation's politics/religion. i'm guessing its a combo of all three.

While I am very excited for a new Tori record, just as I would be for any Prince, Michael Jackson, or Sade release, I am tired of her re-hashing the theme of religion/spirituality/sexuality/sin/Mary Magdalen/Christianity/blah/blah/blah...we get it. You were the daughter of a preacher man who loved to masturbate and also got raped. It was compelling for the first DECADE. I liked that much of "The Beekeeper" steered clear of that stuff (thematically)--except "Original Sinusality" and "Marys of the Sea" of course. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

prince has been singing about sex and god since forever. mj has been singing about world crises and hungry children for years. sade has been...well, shit, sade is sade. i don't know, its like saying "u2 is still singing about changing the world?!" that's who these people are.
