my fav b-side is probably "Purple People", i just fell in love with
it all over again these last weeks and listen to it several times a
day.

i know my favorite should be "Cooling" since it's probably her very
best song concerning my personal psyche and all, but somehow purple
people just strokes me even better.

i love the version of Sugar that's on Venus! the b-side is kicking
and that version just brings out another side of it. very cool cut!

Cooling is so beautiful. It's incredible on how these tunes connect with you.

Do u dig "Seaside"?

seaside always makes me sad because it's about such a sad topic.

but it's a very beautiful song indeed. i'm gonna put it on now!

Choirgirl is my 2nd favorite Tori album overall, I think... 4 of its songs, iieee, Spark, Northern Lad (obviously), and Hotel are among my favorites. But it also has my LEAST favorite, "She's your Cocaine". I think it would have been a better album with "Purple People" instead of "She's Your Cocaine", but then Tori didn't ask my opinion. cool

oh but She's Your Cocain contains that heavenly part:

and is it true, that devils end up like you
something safe for the picture frame

indeed, i really like to add Purple People to that album when i play
it on my computer.

although i do believe that since this is a perfect album imo it's as
good with the song as it is without it.

I adore Merman, and it's definitely one of my Top 5 or 6 favorite Tori songs... But it definitely doesn't fit on any of the albums. It should go with Choirgirl chronologically, but it's an odd fit with that album.

why do you consider it to be the hardest album of hers to listen to?

is it the theme of the album? cuz that's why i love it so much since
it deals with uncontrolable loss and the search for the strength to
let go of everything and start again, stronger.

the nautical theme than runs slightly through it is all about psyche
imo and the burried things in one's (emotional) life.

the most important thing the album tries to narrate imo is extreme
strength and comfort that come from surrender. the ability to peel
off the layers of ego and guard. to me it feels like she's saying:

"i'm ready to strip down and lay here whilst you discect me, whilst
i discect myself and allow my entire notion of self to be picked at
with tweasers until there is nothing left but the very core and from
that point on i'll take over and reconstruct myself with those very
same parts but stronger and more complete than before"

it's about letting go of the reigns and closing your eyes, waiting
for the crash, longing for it, because it is inescapable.

I thinks it's the fact thaty it's very concentrated. While Boys for pele is more...large in terms of duration.

Playboy mommy is one those emotional songs that really impacts me everytime. It's almost like I'm the one who lost a child...the feelings it creates on the listener are indescribable.

The fact that I consider it a dificult album, does not mean I dislike it.

Black-Dove (January)...now that's a tune that is powerful. It send chills all over my body. I'm listening to it now

I interpret it as a confrontation of one's limitations

i see it as a story about growing up trying to be strong and pretending
nothing's wrong when in fact everything is wrong. horribly wrong.

january is another reference to a new beginning (1st month of a new yr)
just like the dove signals the end of the flood (water reference) and it
being a black one is obvious for all the negativity that clung to it as
it grew up and all and i guess also a reference to being 'different'.

the getting to texas is yet another taking leave of the past, whilst
giving away the blue dress imo is about shedding a 'guise' she took on
before in trying to rid herself of the past. one that didn't work for
her anymore, but might work for someone else.

there's also a hint at confronting the past in how
the lion becomes a mouse. confronting the negative
source.

having to get to texas might thus be a reference to
a killing of sorts and having to flee the border.

ah yes, "merman", one of her most beautiful songs and i too have a
very hard time fitting it onto an alternate playlist. it just fits
well with the Choirgirl b-sides but not with the entire album and
it sounds to clean somehow to go onto Pele. and it's absolutely not
a Venus song at all.

It sounds like a sister to "Twinkle". nod

"Cooling" is maybe the saddest, most beautiful song ever.

"Purple People" is another favorite. It sits so nicely right before or after "Playboy Mommy" in the storyline of the album AND for the eerie accordian/organ sound of them.

I actually burned a copy of Choirgirl with all of the b-sides minus "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and adding "Siren". I had to overburn it at, but it turned out perfectly at exactly 82 minutes. I'll try to find my tracklist.

heart Juarez, Riot Poof (She does a live version of this that's a lot better than the studio version, imo. She adds an extra verse at the end.), Datura,Glory of the 80's. I still haven't heard a live version of Datura.....does she ever do it live? The piano work on it is nice.....and she's good at improvising, so I'm sure she could figure something out lyrically.

They're the four I really like from that album, too. Although Datura could've had 90 secs or so shaved off.

Nah. I totally trip out at the cheap Casio beats in the breakdown, man. blunt

I love it when you break it down Isten.

I have a whole storyline mapped out for the album artwork. I'll try to remember how it goes...

It does seem to almost be a horror scenario, doesn't it?

The "in that tiny, kinda scary house...by the woods, by the woods..." part is truly terrifying.
