Tori Amos - To Venus and Back

This album is climbing my Tori charts. I love it more than ever since I burned a copy and added "Zero Point" between "Lust" and "Suede".... it really makes the album feel complete.

She was bonkers to leave that song off the album.

The whole album has such a wonderful, dark, spacey sound to it.... It's really unique. Some of her best songs, too....

Definitely underrated.

anybody else love this album??? love love love

Have you tried putting "Me and You" in the mix too? It fits really well after "Spring Haze" and before "1000 Oceans".

I totally agree. This is my second favorite Tori album after 'Little Earthquakes'. The subtle electronica touches really suited her at the time.

if it weren't for concertina and 1000 oceans (expecially 1000 oceans), this would be my 2nd favorite cd of hers.

What's wrong with those songs? "Concertina" expecially is gorgeous.

I was about to ask that. "Concertina" is one of my top five Tori songs ever.

i've never been able to enjoy 1000 oceans and i honestly think its because it is so out of place on that record. i need to listen to it on shuffle. but i kind of think its just a boring song.

concertina is good but i don't think its anything terribly special. i don't skip it when it comes on and i even enjouy singing along to it, lol. i'm just not really moved by it.

i think every other track on that cd is fantastic, though, and now hearing zero point i'm like, "whaa? why is 1000 oceans here but this is not?"

She probably felt the need to put something more commercial on there to even it out. She still was releasing a lot of singles at that time, and these 2 songs are probably the most likely of the whole bunch. Plus, the album started out as a B-Sides project to fulfill her contract. She recorded a few new songs for it, but they probably weren't all electronica tinged at that point. Although I love it, the song that sounds the most out of place to me is "Josephine". At least "1000 Oceans" has a programmed beat. lol

And I agree about "Zero Point". It shoulda been there. The structure is very similar to "Spring Haze" and it's an epic like "Datura". But it's unique enough to warrant a place on the album. It's like "Army of Me" on peyote. If "1000 Oceans" had been left off, it would make a killer last track.

Sassy - have you had a chance to fully absorb the box set yet?

I like that spot for it, but the quality isn't up to speed.... I can't put it on until we get an official CD quality release of it. A shame she didn't think to include it on "A Piano."

I like 1000 Oceans... i always thought it works particularly well as a closing track. It kinda sums up Venus for me.

But it has leaked in CD quality from a promo copy of the soundtrack.

I love the fuck out of "Concertina" especially the new mix from A Piano.

Seems like every 6 months someone posts about this record here. It was so lost in the shuffle of new releases in 99/2000 and I remember it only sold around 400k but since it was a double album and shipped half million it was certified platinum.

I love the story behind how she conceived it...she owed Atlantic 2 more records and decided to bang it out with a double live album...recorded a few new tracks...and then bam! Whole new LP that picked up the ambient/trip hop vibe of where "Choirgirl" left off.

Anyone remember the interview where she said she and the producers/engineers would all "sit around and do some blow" while recording this one? It's like sonic cocaine...icy, cold, trippy...I totally hear that influence.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

lol

its everything. her style of singing, the sound of the music, the melody...everything. i half expect to find out its a cover of an unreleased kate bush track.

from the opening chords and vocals to the very end, its kate bush through and through. ("putting onmamakeup..." totally kate.)
