80s mellow R&B groove of the day: "Make Me A Believer" by Luther Vandross (1983)

Make Me A Believer
(written by Luther Vandross and Nathaniel Adderly,Jr)

Superman can fly high way up in the sky
'cause we believe he can
So what we choose to believe can always work out fine
It's all in the mind
So think of a place and imagine a time
and let's go be lovers

Believing me,ooh wee baby
is believing right-oh yeah and

(chorus)
I wanna love,wanna have,wanna hold you girl
so make me a believer
wanna love you,girl

Ooh so near
and forever keep you near
Forget all about whatever we fear
and let's just be lovers
Loving and loving,oh love is the way
to make me stay

I know the way to persuade me over to your side
and I am sure you can
So if you get me to believe
it all will work out fine
cause you'll blow my mind
So let's pick a place,a day and a time
and then we'll be lovers
Loving and loving,oh love is the way
to make me stay

(chorus)
I wanna love,wanna have,wanna hold you girl
so make me a believer
I wanna love,wanna have,wanna hold you girl
so make me a believer

music This is my favorite Luther Vandross song.I love the middle section of this song, where it just slows down and goes into a mesmerizing instrumental interlude...you guys know the part I'm talkin' bout? wink This song is effectively dreamy and hypnotic. The 'Busy Body' album is mostly remembered for his stunning remake of "Superstar",but I think the other songs deserve attention as well."Make Me A Believer" is one of Luther's greatest songs.

I need to play the cd again, i really haven`t noticed this song before hmmm

I`m still missing "The night i fell in love" and "Any love" in my collection. Have you heard any of them?

My favorite song is either "So amazing" or his "Power of love/Love power"

"When we walk down the street
we don`t care who we see or who we meet"

Remember Whitney Houston trying to describe his voice?

"His voice was like a hot cappuccino on a cold winters`s night"... cloud9

I have both of those albums.'The Night I Fell In Love' is a masterpiece.Contains a handful of great songs: "Wait For Love","The Other Side Of The World" and a stunning medley of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin" followed by Brenda Russell's "If Only For One Night".Luther had a real knack for remaking songs and making them his own.The title track is also a noteworthy track.

'Any Love' is a good album, but not one of his best. The title track is one of his most haunting ballads music The other songs aren't bad but I think this album is slightly disappointing, especially coming after 'Give Me The Reason',which is excellent. Many fans consider 'Give Me The Reason' to be his best album and it's hard for me to argue with that.

Thanks for the reviews thumbs up! I LOVE "Creepin`", i`m not sure if i`ve heard Stevie Wonder`s original.

You`re right about his covers, no one comes close to his version of "A house is not a home", not even Dionne Warwick...

Oh, i forgot another great song he recorded (and i think wrote), "Always and forever"

"Everyday love me your own special way"

lol "Always and Forever" is a remake of a 1977 song by Heatwave, written by Rod Temperton.I think Diana Ross covers this song on her latest album too.

I think it debuted at Number 33,which isn't soooo bad, considering the way the music biz is these days.I have no idea how many copies it sold.Isn't she gonna go on tour?

I guess most kids today aren`t interested in her music, which is a shame, since she`s just gotten better with age, vocally...

Yeah, she`s going on tour, and hopefully she`ll come to Europe pray

Make Me a Believer is the best song on that album. I also like I Wanted Your Love. I'm one of the few that doesn't like his remake of Superstar.

disbelief lol

It's hard to explain. It's all in the arrangement. I like the vocal arrangement and I like the music arrangement, but I don't like them together. The music in his rendition always seemed more suited to a love song than it did a song about a desperate groupie (that was, incidentally, the song's original title: Groupie).

That's because I don't like that one a whole lot. lol It's a pretty generic mid 80s ballad.

Luther's version of "Superstar" is absolutely amazing.I think the music is perfect for a song about rejection. This is serious heartbreak music! It is sad and haunting.I remember being depressed when I would hear this song...you can really feel his pain. And the words that he says during the fade-out...

I wonder...where are you again tonight
and are you holding someone else real tight

sad I'm getting sad just thinking about that song!

Hated it. Luther needed to do more songs like "Super Lady" and "She Loves Me Back".
Andy is a four letter word.
