Parliament....the "OSMIUM" album

I just bought the debut album by Parliament from 1970 called OSMIUM. It actually reminds you more of Funkadelic than a Parliament record. Does anyone have this album? If so, what do you think of it? I wont lie, I was SHOCKED to hear "My Automobile" because I remember NWA did a remake of that song(a NASTAY one at that) on one of their albums in the late 80's early 90's...never knew that was a Parliament song...

It is essentially a Funkadelic record, material wise. It came out the same year as Free Your Mind, so sound wise as well, it's close to Funkadelic. Same exact cats basically. Yeah, N.W.A. bit super hard off of My Automobile. But yeah, I love Osmium. It's one of my faves by Parliament.

Crappy album.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

yeah it has its moments but things didn't really come together on this one as well as they did on future Parliamentfunkadelic albums. Ruth Copelands singing really drives this project into the ground. the early holland dozier singles make this compilation but it doesn't stand up to well on its own as a record

but I do appreciate hearing Eddie play the lick that would later become Hardcore Jollies

Really? Wow...I dig the shit out of this album. I think it shows wonderful versatility on the band's part. Tracks like "The Silent Boatmen" "Oh Lord/Why Lord" and "I Call My Baby Pussycat" are great tracks to me. Of course the add on "Red Hot Momma" is the shit. One of the best cuts to come out of the Parliament/Funkadelic bag.

It is a really cool record. Just think of how far a head George was at that time. The Original "I Call My Baby Pussycat" is early funk rock.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess wink
I'm really not that much into their Funkadelic stuff as I am into their Parliament stuff, and Osmium is really more like Funkadelic than Parliament.

Hey LoveAlive, since u dug this album, u should really check out Ruth Copeland's two albums; "Self Portrait" from 69 and "I Am What I Am" from 71. Both albums feature George Clinton as co-writer and Eddie Hazel is ALL over both albums. Ruth actually opened up for Sly as Funkadelic as her back up band.

Yeah OSMIUM, the first 3 WestBound releases and the Ruth Copeland sessions are the essence of the PFunk that I find most rewarding. Things get more commercial and poppy, especially the Parliament catalog.

I used to feel the same way

that is until I heard
the stuff from that transitional period
between Westbound & Warner Bros.

and now I favor Funkadelic
over the Parliament albums
love

I mean nothing compares to Funkentelechy vs. Placebo Syndrome
and Motor Booty Affair... Gloryhallastoopid...

I respect it all
when it comes to P-Funk
that's why I can't wait to
get my hands on a copy of that early stuff
like Osmium
