I just hope she gets it all right the first time 'round. I can't wait for the new album. no, huey, what she was saying was if she has songs for a record that have an imperfection, whereas in the past she would have simpy said "oh, there's nothing i can do about that now," today she says, "fuck it, i'm going to make it perfect even if "perfect" isn't what i thought it was when i recorded it." she's not talking about taking old songs that weren't recorded then and modernizing them now. she's talking about taking songs she's working on in the present and not letting time or place settings dictate their being perfected. Awright, but in both instances it means she now tkaes the liberty to tinker her recordings bloodless. I mean, it is Boys For Pele she is talking about. It is like Prince's The Christ or the Beatles' recordings PhilSpectorfucked up; nothing wrong with the originals, damnit. The best work either Tori or Prince have done are the works where they had to work around their limitations. As soon as artist get too comfortable, they start doing stupid, boring stuff most of the time.

I was listening to Beekeeper the other day and I felt like the album was sort of a jam session. Not quite distilled.

What do you see as similar between them? The sentiments in the lyrics or the music itself? Can you break this down for me? Cuz I'm not sure how they're similar at all. Although now I'm getting a few ideas...

Although now I'm getting a few ideas... this is brief and doesn't do my thoughts justice but i'm borrowed time now. boys for pele (in my mind, anyway) is about the the end of relationships, dealing with that ending, yet realizing there's a beginning as the result of this end. its angry, its painful, its scared, but in the end its triumphant. all of this is, of course, through the eyes of a 32 year old (or whatever she was at the time). beekeeper is similarly about the loss of relationship but this is a more familiar relationship. this is a relationship with herself, her sibling, her mother...much more mature than the parental rebellion in pele and the bitter breakup of a romantic relationship. there's still pain and fear and triumph but the triumph is a little more bittersweet, a little more...mortal. its very hard for me to put it into a few paragraphs. i guess its not necessarily the musical element but the lyrical content and subject matter. the way she deals with the different facets of the same emotions. at the time, i could relate to pele perfectly but i no longer have the young angsty feeling; i love the cd (its still my favorite) but i can only relate to it now through memory. today i can relate perfectly to beekeeper, its like the perfect successor to pele for me. anyway, back to contracts.

I dunno. I like Tori to try new things. But for the past decade, I've found Trent to be incredibly boring. I never buy his shit anymore.
