Why is Britney's hair such a big deal???

I can only assume she's going the India.Arie route and doing a "spiritual cleansing" These news magazines are calling her "out of control" and having a "breakdown." WTF!! There's nothing wrong with shaving her head. Maybe she's going butch shrug

Now, they're acting like a tatoo is the end of the world!

its a big deal because low brow, short attention span, and poorly informed americans make it a big news item.

i thought it was funny for the first hour it was "news" but, like everything else in celebrity, its gone awry and become another pathetic example of the fame obssessed mentality of the middle class.

I don't get the big deal either but I can't stop talking about it either. I don't think she's crazy for it, I just find it all very fascinating

Well, when Erika Badu shaved her head, some folks freaked. But unlike Britney, Erika is about music. Britney has nothing else really. And that's all the news media clings too.

Plus, on some level, alot of folks (me included) love to see the highschool cheerleader fall in with the Goth/punk/stoner crowd. lol

ummm... well she walked into a salon in tears and picked up some clippers and started shaving her head on the spot.

you don't think that's a little wacko?

it's funny though that you pay attention to it enough in the first place to become sick of it. i just heard about it yesterday and i've seen maybe 1 or 2 reports on it. it's still funny to me lol

k. well, when was the last time a mentally balanced person, let alone a celebrity that makes her bones on her looks, went into a public salone and started hacking off her own hair?

surely she's got a bathroom at home for that sort of psychosis.

ok, maybe she didn't have the right clippers or whatever someone uses to do that. shrug She seemed pretty mellow in the video. Other celebs have done this and no one thought they were crazy. I saw a lot of this being covered today and I don't get why they're saying she's crazy

generally speaking, upper class folks don't read gossip mags nor do they watch much tv. the working class falls into the middle class. if you're talking about the working poor, they've generally got more important things taking up their time.

I think it is 1 of 2 reasons:

1)She is doing this all for the media/press coverage. (No press is bad press..to some people.)

2)She is troubled and needs help..in some kind of way.

look, all i'm saying is coming from my family background, seeing how they live and how their neighbors and coworkers and friends live, they don't keep up with this stuff. my aunt and uncle (and all their south glastonbury, connecticut friends, kept their kids too busy with after school activities for them to pay attention to this stuff. they had a tv that pretty much only went on when a mivoe was rented.

please, you hear people like madonna saying over and over again how "my kids don't watch tv. its trash." that's probably not a lie. they'll serve the trash to you but they aren't fool enough to eat it up themselves.

why hasn't our media covered iraq with half the ferver its covered britney and anna nicole? why has our 30 minute local news become dumber and dumber? meanwhile the corporations that own them get richer and richer and our laws get crazier and crazier.

you do the math.

i agree. there's some good stuff on tv. and there's nothing wrong with the occassional binge of trash tv. its the gluttonous mentality that scares me. people in this country simply know about paris hilton's sex life and britney spears's latest breakdown than they do about US foreign policy or the latest bill being voted on in congress.

and american media is doing its best to make sure it stays that way.

Last time Britney had a crisis, she started cutting away at her hair... it's something intrinsic to her character when she tries to "escape".

Why we give a fuck, I don't know

True, but I think that just has to do with our different levels of education. it creates different interests. You can be upper class with no education and just as obsessed with this stuff. What do you think Paris Hilton knows about foreign policy?

my family, and pretty much everyone i know, is middle class and most of them don't keep up with it either. it's more a thing for young people. and even then, i think the amount of interest/care they have in it is overexaggerated.

the VH1 countdowns, the E! 101 lists, the tabloids in the supermarkets, Entertainment Tonight, etc., are something to notice in passing for most people, be they upper class, middle or lower. it's something to get 5 minutes of laughs out of. i think portraying so many people as being engrossed by celebrity lives/gossip is skewed. yes, it's a big money/ratings generator, but i think the actual interest the majority of people actually have in it is vastly overstated.

What the fuck does my being a Janet fan really have to do with the discussion at hand??? Don't try to discount my opinion and discard it based on another artist I like. I'm not even a Britney fan, but I still don't see what the problem is and you have failed to give be a solid reason why shaving your head is a problem. If she was a man would it be a problem? What's wrong a person, male or female, shaving their head and getting a tatoo???? Please tell me!

'Why is Britney's hair such a big deal???'

Why is Britney such a big deal? She's been 90% image since the beginning, which I guess kinda answers the question of "Why is Britney's hair such a big deal." When your career thrives on how much you can flip your hair while you gyrate across a stage in a skimpy outfit, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for you to cut it all off, especially when you're trying to make your huge comeback. I've yet to read anything about Britney that doesn't have the words, "beautiful", "gorgeous", "hot", or "blonde" somewhere in it. Does that mean that I'm calling alot of people superficial, pretty much, but unfortunately we live in a very superficial society where pretty people get a lot of perks and undeserved attention even if they are dumb as dog shit and/or mean as hell. If she's going for a punk image, it's not going to make more punk music fans listen to her music just because she shaved her head, at least I hope they're not that damn shallow. She could have cut it super short like Angela Bassett did in "Waiting to Exhale" or just stopped wearing all those extensions, but to just go bald and then cry after you've done it, is sad and pathetic. If she was soo happy with the idea that cutting her hair was going to possibly give her a fresh start, than wouldn't she be happy and not in tears after the deed was done? I don't think those were tears of joy, considering that she's now wearing a wig to cover up her newly sheared dome. If she's as happy as she leads people to believe she is, she needs to rock her Mr.Clean head and prove to the world that she did it because she wanted a new image and a fresh start on life, but to cover it up so soon after, makes it look like either a Dare that went horribly wrong, an incomplete thought while in a drug-induced state, or some internal issues that she really needs to address with a therapist. Plus, I don't understand why she felt the need to travel to some obscure, little salon to cut off her own hair. She has millions of dollars and the clippers that she used to cut her hair looked like they didn't cost more than $40. As rich as she is, I know she can afford to buy some clippers. She could have sat in front of a mirror in the privacy of her mansion and shaved her own head or she could have paid someone to go to her mansion and do it for her, but she just had to make a scene. Either she's doing it for publicity or hoping that someone will pull her aside and ask her, "Do you need someone to talk to? Do you want help?" I wonder what her children thought about this? I'm pretty sure they were a little confused and probably a tad bit freaked out. Unfortunately, Britney's hair issues are not the most annoying thing that people have made a big deal about in recent months. When will I be able to turn on the TV and not hear about the latest findings in the Anna Nicole Smith death?? Why don't they just bury that poor woman already? All those greedy bastards fighting for custody of that baby, because she's worth some money. Seems to me that all they see when they look at that little girl is a moving bag of cash. It's really sad that the baby is only 5 months old and has to have her own attorney to look out for her best interests...it's a baby for god's sake! Are they really that greedy to where they would steal from a motherless infant? Plus, I'm soo sick of hearing about the Beckhams moving to the US. Who gives a shit? It's not like they are the first British people to move to the States. Did the British news make this big of a deal when Madonna moved across the pond? I damn sure hope not, because if they did, than they are just as bad as the American press. Oh, and that baby Suri shit made me want to set my TV on fire and don't get me started on "Brangelina".rolleyes Many people make a big deal about celebrities, because they were made by the public. We watch their movies, buy their albums, and go to their sporting events. The money we "Normals" work so hard to make turns these people into multi-millionaires, so to see one of them doing something ridiculous, is kinda disappointing and heartbreaking, because you gave a lot of your time, energy, and money to this person's success and they just kinda shit on it and fuck it up. I stopped supporting Whitney when I finally believed that she was doing drugs, because I'm not going to support her bad habit. I'm not going to help her kill herself, so my money won't be feeding her addiction anymore. Lastly, I'm actually tired of hearing people say things like, "I can't believe people are talking about this, when there's a war going on." Yeah, there's a war going on. A war has been going on for...hmm, more than 2 years now; and it will keep going on until our "fearless leader" finishes his term. As much as I wish it was possible, talking about the war isn't going to just suddenly make it stop, just like saying that there are millions of people dying from AIDS and poverty; and stating that teachers are some of the most underpaid people, yet they are the most important, isn't going to just make everything change for the better. There's a war going on in Africa right now and millions of people are dying so that others can wear diamonds. After hearing about what happens to get these "blood diamonds", I was pretty upset to see how much praise is given to a shiny rock...a shiny rock that someone probably died for. One thing that needs to be remembered is millions of people had to vote for Dubyah to become President, so I'm not going to put the blame of this war solely on his shoulders. Hopefully, the next guy will make some changes. Sorry, but talking about a war that you can't stop is just as pointless as talking about Britney being bald, except for the fact that I don't want to cry when I talk about Britney like I do thinking about all those amazing soldiers who are dying for something...what that something is I'm not quite sure, but I really do hope that it is for someone's freedom. Just my twocents.

Venting makes you feel soo much better. biggrin

I think her hair is a big deal because....it comes right after all the other crazy things she's been doing lately...

***partying every night with crazy pals like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan
***going to nightclubs without any underwear on,allowing the paparazzi to photograph her with no panties on
***her trainwreck of a marriage and the tacky,attention-seeking reality show
***driving around town with her baby in her lap (!)

To many people,it appears that her life is spiraling out of control. They see this latest move (the haircut) as just another sad publicity stunt....a cry for help. Not saying that I necessarily agree, but that's how people feel.
