sadly, i haven't heard dark magus yet since i'm buying my
miles albums one by one and this one just hasn't come up yet but

oh i'm sorry i didn't say why i liked them so much, but that's
kind of impossible to answer. i guess it's just a matter of
what music makes you feel good or special and these two albums
do. it's kind of like asking why i think parade is such a good
prince album. i don't know, i just love it to death and i can
just listen to it a thousand times without ever getting bored.

I've been trying to get my hands on Pangaea and Agartha, but I had Dark Magus for awhile and got rid of it because I didn't like it...maybe I should have given it more of a chance.

"Agharta" and "Pangea" are two of my Miles favourite.
That said, I agree with IstenSzek with the difficult to tell exactly "why" I like them so much.
For me Miles' records are just "experiences" and what makes difference is the feeling I get (think at "On The Corner"; I really like it, but there are no words to describe why).
Obviously the sound quality in "Agharta" and "Pangea" gives the right chance to the complexity of Miles music and the strong playing of all the musicians t be completely witnessed.
Even if it is musically more chaotic and unfocused I like also "Dark Magus", but unfortunately it suffers of a muddled sound quality that give limits to the music's space, makin' it less accessible than what it deserves and less enjoyable.

Probably my least favorite is Dark Magus, as it is angry, ferocious, and.....well, dark.

Agharta is also dark and a bit depressing, but has intense grooves and a bit of a rock sound that I enjoy. I would listen to it if I were in the right mood - if I am not, Agharta is too instense and difficult. You have to think when you listen to it, instead of simply enjoy it in the background.

Pangaea is probably my favorite of the three. It is cutting edge, powerful, and stunning.

I love 'em...though sometimes you have to be in the mood for a mass of thick, black, swampy improvisational Funk/Jazz(?) .... as others have said, this stuff is more about taking time to conjure up an earthy sound, mood and feel, rather than chops...if you don't like that dense, dark swamp, you'll probably won't like it...I can see why critics like 'Stanley the Grouch' can't stand this stuff,

Oh yeah, and I'm a big fan of Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas! ...

Agharta and Pangaea are by far his best albums from that period (1972-76).

As others have said, when you're in the right mood they're fantastic.

When you're not in the mood, they can totally piss you off!

I guess that's what I love about them

I always found the best parts of these albums is when they break it down to some slow groove. Then Miles plays over it with the wah, wah trumpet - very haunting!

Haven't heard those in some eleven years. They didn't used to be so widely available as they are today, you had to buy the japanese imports.
