I purchase downloads and buy cds as well. The only time I don't purchase a download is when the music is out of print. Should I be backing up my dowloads on a disc? How do I do that?

The best way to backup would be to get an external firewire or usb harddrive and copy your whole library to it. It will probably set you back about US$100 depending on how big your library is. You could also copy your important files to it.
Otherwise you could backup to cd or dvd if you have a writer. But you may need to burn tonnes of discs. The method of doing this would depend on your computer and which playback software you use. Also with buring to disc it's hard to keep track of songs you've added to your library since your last backup... I guess you could make a playlist that you add every new song to though.
If you have an external drive you can just copy your library to it every few months. Very simple/fast.

I have a smart playlist that includes songs added after date X and then change the date every time I backup.

You need an external hard drive as opposed to a flash drive. Once you get one, you just copy the folder that contains your library (e.g., the iTunes folder) onto the hard drive.

No. There should be a folder on your hard drive where all your music files are kept. Check the preferences of RealPlayer. When you have your external drive hooked up, browse to that folder and copy it to the new drive.

This reminds me.. Loreena McKennitt's website ( http://www.quinlanroad.com ) offers FLAC Lossless downloads of her albums. You end up paying around the same as a normal CD, though.

Go with the apple lossless when importing cd's. It's pretty sweet.

I have iTunes (on iMac), so where do I change this option? What version of iTunes?

itunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing>Import Using

I have the latest version. Not what version they introduced it.
