Rachelle Ferrell

My was she wonderful at the Celebration or what? I never heard her music before, but after hearing her sing at the Celebration Wow;I'm a Fan. What a powerful Voice she has. How many other People who went to the Celebration feel the same way or just how many people enjoy Rachelle Ferelle? Prince had a Great Line up cause Victor Wooten was jammin also. Everybody was totally Slammin.

I said it once and I still maintain this viewpoint, I think Rachelle Ferrell(George Duke's cousin) is the best female singer of the last 10 years. She knows how use those octaves in her voice effectively(she doesn't overdo it like Mariah), she can scat, when she covers a song she brings something totally different to it, though her amazing vocal intrepretations, she can do it all. Just think of her as a female Al Jarreau. Get her 1995 masterwork First Instrument (my pick for one of the 25 greatest jazz recordings EVER). You won't be sorry.

Peace,
Brother 9/15

I've heard exactly one album by Ms. Ferrell, and it sounded like bland, predictable, rote, adult contemporary 90s music. Don't remember what the title was, it was loaned to me about 5 or 6 years ago. But it was pretty forgettable. Maybe I haven't heard her best material, because nowadays I hear everybody raving about her. Whatever the case, the one album I listened to bored me to tears.

Oh yeah, the debut album Rachelle Ferrell is worth your time as well, if you don't already have it.

if Diana Krall can get all the attention she gets than Rachelle Ferrell should be getting some as well IMHO

Sounds like you probably got the debut album Rachelle Ferrell, I thought it was pretty good for a debut record. Yes it does have that adult contemporary feel. First Instrument is a more adventurous effort. Rachelle is diving into some straight-ahead jazz material along with some be-bop jazz. She has a song on it called "Prayer Dance" that is sweet...what can I tell you. And her rendition of "Autumn Leaves"is astonishing. The vocal gymnastics she displays on this is awesome. Every time I listen to this recording I pick up something I didn't pick up before. This 1995 recording is a true testament to her talent.

CalhounSq and Supernova, if you ever get the recording, orgnote me and let me know what you think of it.

Yes, I have the debut album. Her voice is phenomenal but overall it's a little too adult contemporary for me, not jazzy enough. Still, there's some very nice songs on that one. & her voice is undeniable no matter what she's singing.

I plan to get First Instrument, I'll let you know what I think.

Also, I bought an album of hers for my sister - I think it was last year or the year before. I can't remember what it's called but I never got to listen to it myself before I gave it to my sis - have you heard it? What's it like? All I know is it's more jazzy than her debut...

I really wanted to disagree and hear the genius the others speak of but I can't. Just got "Rachelle Ferrell" her 1992 second album (First Instrument was her debut in 1989) and it's that MOR, Quiet Storm, lyrically and musically dull, sub Luther/Anita sound to me.

Undoubtedly a great voice though, with some good material she could be awesome.
