Susanne Bartsch's Love Ball 1989 (Voguing)

Entertainment Tonight did a piece on Susan Bartsch's Love Ball back in May 1989. That was the first time I'd ever heard of voguing. It was sort of fascinating at the time, because, to most people, it was a new dance form. It didn't take off until a year later when Madonna popularized it, or bastardized it, depending on your take. This is a fascinating peek (for me, anyway) at it before it was mainstreamed. Watch for Lady Kier Kirby before she was popular. The second half of the clip isn't really that involving except for an appearance by pre-murder Michael Alig.

Interesting to note that they're voguing to Love Break, the song Madonna sampled in Vogue.

Yeah, the horn hits in Vogue are taken from that. Just watched the video again and noticed RuPaul around the 3:40 mark. I didn't hear anything about him not knowing who Lady Kier was.

OMFG, you just made me realize how old I am lol. Susanne used to throw THE MOST FABULOUS parties at a gay club called the Warsaw Ballroom in South Beach then, before the place became over run with tourists. I was TOTALLY underage, going to these parties with one of my college teachers who was in the closet during work hours (with his fine New York hi brow art scene ass) and he taught me how to VOGUE , baby! lol

biggrin You're welcome.

On a related note, here's a clip of Malcolm McLaren's 1989 club smash Deep in Vogue, featuring the late great Willie Ninja. Two of Madonna's Blonde Ambition dancers - Jose and Luis - were from the Xtravaganza house.
